Die Holder

Same set I've had for decades except mine is Blue Point by Snap-On. 12 point also. In my ignorance I didn't know that wasn't standard and how they all are.

This set is not intended for machinists, unfortunately. The taps don't have a center drilled in the back and are crowned instead. Can't use a spring-loaded tap guide with them. I have several Craftsman sets that are center-drilled so I use those on the dp.

OK; I bought a T/D set at a garage sale for $10. Western Auto stuff made in Japan. Only 2 of the taps look used. Anyhow, they're smaller than my other set of round Dies so I located a stick of mystery metal and plan on making another Die Holder.

My die holder uses an insert to actually hold the die. Keeps me from needing as much material to fit another size die.
I try my best to always get 1” round dies from MSC. Makes it easier.

Something else to consider with the die holder is if the die is adjustable via a split and wedge screw. Many dies, both round and hex, have this feature so the pitch diameter can be changed. There should be enough room in the holder to accommodate the max adjutment.

Here is my sketch. Not sure this would be easier to do than cutting off a socket and
inserting it and pinning it. The trick is to get the large hole just large enough, but
leave bits at the corner holes to grab the die. Not the greated sketch, either.
