Tomorrow i am going to order from Optics Planet a Magnetospeed Sporter Chronograph. Other than what comes in the package. Age there any other items that would come in handy in using the Chronograph? Its on sale for 179 with no shipping or handling.
I know my list of recorded information is going to increase.

wow.
179 is less than I paid for my CED-2 chrono 20 sumthin years ago.

if this is one that sit's out in front of the bench, a tri-pod, and if they offer a shield it would be worth looking at.

I bought the $300 full kit when they first came available and it's all I use anymore, best shooting accessory I own. Mine even came with an sd card and 9v battery, the basic kit might not but it should have everything else needed to get started. I use mine on revolvers just fine, no big deal if you get creative with the mounting.

My brother bought the lesser kit. 10x better than the cheap Chrony I use. You will love this thing.

YES There is another item that will come in handy. There is a second wire that can connect the memory box that goes to either an I PAD or a smart phone to record all your shots. its just under 30$. I may get it in the future.

I had problems with my Magnetospeed recording cast bullets.

Also the fittings are pretty restrictive as to the type of barrels they will fit, I shoot a lot of military and old guns and it was real pain and impossible to get good alignment on these.

Worked very well with condom bullets and sporter barrels, just things I do not shoot much of so the Magnetospeed went the journey.

I did contact Magnetospeed about using it with cast bullets, fiddled with the sensitivity still no improvement, Magnetospeed were then vague saying that it may or may not work with cast bullets.

This is the first time i have heard about the prob. with cast. I am going to try them next, i have only used jacketed so far. Kevin

I have had no problems with magnetospeed, cast bullets and sporter barrels. For some reason, however, it will not record cast bullets from my break-action combination gun. Jacketed bullets from this gun records without problems.
Somthing to consider, however; the storage box the sporter comes in is really tight. In order to fit everything inside, you may tend to wind the cable tightly around the unit. I resently replaced my first magnetospeed as it broke, i think a connectivityproblem. I will find a slightly larger box for this delicate piece of machinery.

Some people I know do get some cast to work in it, I suspect that the alloy content may have something to do with it. For my uses its operation was far to marginal. That was a couple of years ago now and things might have changed.

Mine is one of the early ones and it does fine with cast bullets from 800 fps to 2600, .22 to 45. There have been occasions when I had the bayonet too close to the muzzle by a scoshe and had to re-engineer the mounting (military rifle with bayonet mount feature) to correct that, but if the unit is presented to the bullet per the instructional/dimensional drawing, the unit never fails to work for me. I don't even remember the custom sensitivity setting I use for cast bullets because it hasn't needed adjustment in a long while. I think I punched it up to six from five and haven't had an error in many hundreds of shots on all sorts of rifles.

Yes getting it to fit non standard barrels is another issue with it, if it isn't aligned properly then it won't work. As I have said getting it to fit at the right angle and distance on military, stutzen or anything other than a bare barrel is a real bugger.

It may not fit all people's needs, but probably fills 80-90% far better, easier, and more cheaply than anything else on the market. I like that it works in the dark, I can set it up in my shop at home in the air conditioning and then take it to the range with 10 second setup time, nothing in front of the bench at a public range, and it measures actual muzzle velocity.

If you really get ornery with it, you can fabricate a variety of effective custom mounts using cling wrap as a mould release and epoxy putty as a base forming material. Use a steel rod, taped to fit the bore snugly, as alignment and support for the bayonet (with appropriate spacers in between) while the putty hardens.
