Engraved by the rifling

I have had problems with a lot of different types of .30 cal. cast bullet designs in my Ruger # 1, 30-30 Win.

The throat ( or lack of one ) is such that about 90% of my .30 cal. cast bullets won't chamber in the rifle unless they are deep seated.

I bought a Lyman 31141 HP mould from Brad a few days ago.
It appears that this bullet mould was custom made specifically for this rifle. ( I've always read that the 31141 was made for the 30-30 , so this isn't a real big surprise )

With an OAL that puts the crimp groove at the end of the case mouth, I get ( in my opinion ) ideal engraving. I am looking forward to testing this combination.
The nose diameter with my alloy in the area you see in the photo below is .300 "
If you look at how close the end of the rifling is to the end of the case neck, you can easily see why so many of my favorite .30 cast bullet designs won't chamber.

Do you feel the crimp is necessary In a single shot Ben? I crimp for a lever gun but not a bolt action or single shot. Crimp to help initial powder burn?
Maybe I should try it.

My chamber is super tight.
If there is just a little bit of flare left on a loaded round, it becomes
difficult to chamber. So to alleviate that problem, I crimp.
A round with the crimp allows the breech block to close with no problem at all.
The groups I've been shooting seem to indicate that there is no
harm being done to accuracy with the crimp.

Makes sense. I agree, looks like ideal rifling engagement.

That looks absolutely perfect! I’m sure that will work very well for you. Have you decided which loads to try first?

So interesting! Throats and barrels can be so different for all the 30 cals.

Here is a picture of a 30-06 dummy I put together last night. It’s a Lyman 311041. Rifle is a M1917, original five groove barrel.

Inserted into to the front of the barrel this bullet stops about a 1/16” before the first driving band, it measures .302” at that point on the powder coated nose. Yet when chambered it doesn’t even engage the rifling until it hits the first driving band, which is sized at .311”.

I reallly enjoy my NOE 310-178-RD mold for this. Its got a fairly wide driving band and when seated in a proper length and crimped in a 30/30 That driving band engraves beautifully!! (Usually shoots really well too)

Nice Bullet Ben! I cast allot of those in non HP. Good bullet no doubt!!

Ben, that first picture is what I try to get in all my milsurp match loads, it will not work sometimes in a k31, but for all the others it's perfect

Assuming the bullet is seated in proper alignment with the center of the bore, it doesn't leave much chance for misalignment with the bore now does it ?

Being a Ruger I am surprised it is that tight Ben. Every ruger rifle I have had had throats like a Handirifle. You could not get the bullet out far enough to touch the rifling and still have the bullet in the case.

Was that #1 a special order type of gun or was it a normal gun they made?

their stainless guns have pretty much no throat.
my 308, 223, and 358 are all stainless Rugers and hoo-boy do I get engraving.
I learned how to play with alloy and manipulate mold temps because of them.

I have not bought a ruger rifle since about 2006. I had 2 different 243Win Chambers were huge and the throats were long. Brass was done with after 3 loadings. I never checked the head space but by how big the ring around the web was I would say they would have ate a nogo. Same way with a mini14

I would like to learn more about this manipulation of alloy and temps.
