Look what I found on Sunday. I'm not sure what to do with it. I already have two 4500s. Find a collector or keep as a back up?

Nice find.
Do those accept the current production H&I dies ?
I think I see one on the table.
The reason I ask is because I was told they do not.

I think the do but not sure. Remember reading that the old dies have too large holes compared to the new ones. The unit came with a .356 and a .452.

Original box, wrench, booklet and a bit of surface rust on one of the shafts. I'm thinking 1960s decade but not sure.

WOW. I'd say put it in a glass box, but then again it was meant to be used.

The modern Lyman dies will fit just fine even though the set screws don't seem to line up with the land between the sealing o-rings in the die and can cut the top o-ring when tightened.

The few RCBS dies that I have are about .002" too large on the bottom to go into the old 45s, and that doesn't sound like much but is a lot of sanding to get them to fit.

Lyman H&I dies fit the Lyman 45, 450, 4500.
Lyman top punches also fit all three models.

I'm not aware that Lyman made more than 1 size of H & I sizer.

I still use a 45 for 22's and 6MM. Agree with Ben, on the one size factor, plus H&I dies work in RCBS Lube sizer and RCBS size dies work in Lyman sizers.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I like the 45 a lot better than the 450 if it's any help. But I'm kinda odd any way.

Neat find!

I'd put it away & auction it during the next panic, only because I'm finally set up with a star.

I have four 45s mounted to the bench and one 450 collecting dust underneath if that tells you anything.

I have a dust collecting 450 and one Star. I don't buy antiques, I just marry their daughters......

Your missing out! Some antiques are better than anything produced today.
My star is older than me and old enough to be considered an antique. I really prefer antique vehicles too. Antique guns, trucks, knives, wood, & many others are worth having.
Modern conveniences spoil us.

Just don't overtighten the retainer screw for the die. There are alot of 45's with cracks from overtightening them.

I'd have to use it myself, it's too cool not to.
But since you already have a good setup, I'm sure you can make a nice profit quickly too.

Is the alignment on these as good or better than the typical 4500 or RCBS? If it's good, what heater should I get for it? The 4500 have the plug in units.

I think I paid too much for it. $100, but it is reallly cool retro and I like those things. I might set it up for my retro bullets. 8mm, 45 Colt etc.

The alignment is far better, but the leverage far less. Like RH said, don't overtighten the die set screw, it will crack the frame or at least stretch it oblong...in which case the die will be forced out of alignment to the rear. I have to shim the back of the die on a few of mine due to overzealous previous owners. An advantage of the 45 is you will never cross thread the die retention nut because it doesn't have one. If your 45 has a brass split ring for a lube piston seal, beware it will bypass lube like crazy. The pressure piston can be replaced with an o-ring type out of a 450 or 4500.

I don't know about alignment being any better than an RCBS or not but the 45 is a more elegant, refined tool than either the RCBS or later 450/4500. As Ian said, it's more delicate too. Don't horse it. I would think any base type heater would work fine.

FYI- the 8mm and 45 aren't "retro". It's just that the rest of the world hasn't caught on yet...troglodytes.

I have one, it works fine for me, and I can verify it uses std
Lyman dies and top punches. Handle is weak, have to take it easy on the
old girl. I always thought my Lyman 450 had flimsy linkage, comparing it
to my RCBS (near clone), but once I got the 45, I saw that the 450 was
a lot stronger than the 45 - and RCBS came along later (I assume) and made theirs
even stronger. Is the 4500 linkage upgraded from the 450?
