First Cast Bullet Kill

This was my first handgun kill with a cast bullet. A 250 lb. wild boar taken at 35 yards with a custom revolver chambered in 510 GNR. Complete penetration and the boar traveled 10 yards before expiring.

The bullet weighs 385 grains from a custom designed Mountain Mold.

Okay Randominator, We or at least I expect to hear more a about this 50. Loads, velocity, and more. I have been wanting a 50 Special but could not justify it as I have a 480, but, really what does justification have to do with firearms. Although there is the money thing. I was looking for a 300 plus slug at 800 to 950 fps, just seemed right.
Thanks for posting, now you've taken my focus from the 38-55 to a 50 handgun. But..........
Waiting for more.

Not very exciting! About 1962-63 at the shooting area on the farm in Ohio. Brother Bob had his 44 Remington and I had my 36 Colt. As we were walking up to put up a dirt clod for a target, I saw a rabbit about two feet in front hiding. Shot it in the back of the head. It ate well though.

My first handgun kill was a groundhog with a .357 and a 158 grain swc at 20 yards. I was walking up the hill at the club from target practicing, there he was. Amid for the head, put a nice, clean, wad cutter hole all the way thru his chest.
Not as impressive as you guys.
Seams every time I go hunting larger game with a handgun, all the animals go on sabbatical to Rome or something.
I have gotten quit a few wad cutter got rabbits in my stew pot though.
Like to give hog hunting a try with a revolver. lt seams like it would be fun. However I would need a gun like yours to feal confident at taking one with a revolver.

Very satisfying for sure!!

My first was a Deer with a 45 Colt many moons ago.

But I get almost as excited with every "new" caliber & Bullet!!!

I remember a 500 S&W shot with my LEE 440g and light load of 5744. Two of us where still hunting a flat. One would walk 50 ish yards stop. Let woods calm. Second would walk that fifty, ten fifty more then stopping and allow woods to calm. Well I had just stopped and he started. Small buck was standing broad side in front as he just passed me. It didnt see either of us. I got to watch, That big Meplat bullet hit that deer straight in/on shoulder and literally pushed him 8-10" sideways!!! It almost literally "blew him down"!! He got up went down got up went down. Never traveled 10'.

The 510 GNR is a very versatile cartridge. It is simply a shortened 500 Linebaugh, 1.250" vs 1.400". Any 510" diameter bullet can be used ranging from 350 grains and up. I have pushed this 385 grain bullet to 1400 fps with no pressure signs and have settled on a moderate load using 4227 for 1175 fps.

The cartridge can be loaded with Trailboss to make a slow, heavy thumper, or the bullet can be seated out longer using a lube groove to crimp in using regular 500 Linebaugh load data. Brass was available from Cartridge Performance Engineering, but when Andy closed the business brass has been scarce. 348 Winchester or 500 Linebaugh brass can be shortened to use in a pinch. Gary may have some brass available.

The gun started with a 8" barrel including a brake and scope.

I soon discovered that was overkill and shortened the barrel to 6" with no brake and installed a JPoint reflex sight.

Looks much better with the shorter barrel, can't stand M brakes personally. But that's just me, they do work good. Scopes are for rifles. The Reflex sites are supposed to really help out eyes, besides being quick on the target.
Looks nice, beautiful revolver. I Read up on the 510 GNR after seeing your post, and figured my 480 pushing a 410 between 1100 and 1200 will get the job done for anything currently on this planet. I Can afford the 480, but, I am envious.
I'd still like a five shot 50 Special to plink with. Wife says I don't need that one either, says I have enough guns to play with. But that's just not a true statement, goes against the natural order Mankind. But I really do need to pay more attention to the ones I have now.

Looks like a lot of thought went into your revolver. Caliber and load.
With that load in the longer barrel how is the recoil? Is it like the sharp hard kick of a factory 454.
Or is it more of a slow hard push like a 50 cal muzzle loader? I like it slow and hard. (Recoil guys, recoil).
Or is it some where in between.
Asking because old arther has a tendency to keep me from revolvers of that caliber. By making my hand scream in pain a couple hours later after shooting more then 2 rounds.
