Sorry to hear the news of your friends passing.
I have two nieces who are RN's. They are sisters. The oldest of the two (32) just tested positive for the virus. Now the both of them and their mother are in a hard quarantine. The good news is so far the virus has not made Rebecca seriously ill. The bad news is who knows how many have been compromised before she found out.
It really is a different kind of war.

Very sorry to hear this, Ric.

A lot of people right now are put out by the "inconvenience" of being "stuck" at home, not realizing the seriousness of it all - and not really caring. There is a large percentage of our population "medically-compromised," as CZ93x62 put it. Most of those people fit that class by having put in many decades of effort and hard work, learning lessons which would benefit those who come behind them, and have much to contribute in the way of wisdom and knowledge. This is taking, or threatening to take, a priceless part of our future - not to mention loved ones.

I lost eight loved ones last year myself. I'm holding out for a stay on that atrittion for my own friends and family as well as everyone else's.

My agency has lost 2 deputies over the last 2 days, with 40+ off work due to COVID-19 symptoms. Both were healthy men in their late 30s/early 40s.

This disease is NO JOKE.

If it's a joke it sure is mighty bad one. Were either of the two anyone you knew? Over 40 off the job sure has to be putting a hurt on the agency, how are they managing that?

The more recent fatality was to a guy I worked with at my last duty station, and knew pretty well.

The jails seem to be getting the brunt of the illness. Until about a year ago, there was a program in place to pay retired personnel to perform less-critical tasks within the agency--range quals, background investigations, CCW issuance. That disappeared as of the last fiscal year, and many of the retirees who were working those details moved out of state permanently. There were over 100 such folks. A few have remained in place as unpaid reserves, but most are gone. I have no idea what the answers might be. I have sufficient work just trying to dodge the mangy critters and stay alive right now.
