Congrats on the new to you rifle, I hope it pans out to be a great shooter. I had a Sav. 340C in 22 Hornet with a side mounted Japanese 3 × 9 Kmart scope on it back around 30 years ago. One of the best darn rifles I ever owned and it was a tack driver to boot, it got stolen and was never recovered. Threads like this sure bring back some fond memories of one of the first centerfire cartridge I reloaded for.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Epps, Wasn't he (in)famous for sporterizing 303 Enfields in the 50 and 60's?

Yup, and he came up with a variety of wildcats based off the 303 Brit case too IIRC. The SMLE was about as popular and ubiquitous in Canada as the 94 Win was in the states near as I can tell.

Something I forgot to ad. Savage used date codes on all there guns made after 1949.

I will look close when I have it out of the stock.

CW

EDIT:

Apparently that date code was for SHOTGUNS ONLY! Also it was not a "stand alone" letter. It was a SN PREFIX. As I dont have a SN... I dont have a prefix.

But further info says, My receiver says Chicopee Falls. Making it a PRE1960 MFG gun. (More coming if your interested! )

Bring it.

All I know is I have a pair of 219s, one made in Chicopee Falls (circa 1932) and one made in Utica slightly earlier. Neither have SNs but have three-letter codes stamped on the inside of the receiver, in the wood of the forearm channel, and under the butt plate.

All date codes I ever read of on Savage/Stevens was begun in 1949 and started with A.
So pre 1949.... Who knows just a letter?? SN where not required so factory count or some such...

i had two old Shotguns. Pre 311's. 5100's I thought?? One was newer and wore those "plactic" stocks. Other was older and walnut.

I may possibly have a first model. My receiver says 340. I have the desire able sites and my receiver is marked Chicopee Falls. So weather its a 340, 340A or B . (The "C" models where in the 1960's.) Its was made in the 1950"'s for sure. Its hard to tell for 100% a few markers tell the story.

I have been re reading this Leeroys Ramblings page on the Savage 322/325/340/840.

Loads of information and a good read if these rifles interest.

I received a email yesterday... Apparently this "EPPS" company I ordered the Peep from has some issues... I noticed no $$ conversions when I saw they was in Canada. Ok well its a few dollars. Shipping was about 15$. Again a lil costly but I cannot find this peep and I do want it. I completed the order. Paid the 93$ for the Williams peep delivered to me in CT.

Email was to inform me that there web site was and had not been setup for international orders and they needed 28$ MORE. Nothing about the 100$ that I paid nearly totaled 125 Canadian...

I cancelled the order. Ill keep looking for reputable companies here in USA!

NOT HAPPY WITH Ellwood EPPS Outdoors.

Did you call Williams? They might not have one listed in the catalog but might scrounge one from the back room. They have always been most helpful when I have called. They used to have some pretty fair gunsmiths on their staff as well. They might be able to give you a lead on one for less than its weight in gold.

Williams lists the Target knob receiver sight for the Savage 340 for $89. Still current production. Should be able to get it.

I was on Williams web site. I did see that and target knobs was offered, that would have been fine.
Out of stock was the story. Google cover page said "available" but web Site said OUT OF STOCK. :sigh:

Here is a few more pics of the #175

The thing I like about that sight above is that it mounts aperture rearwards to give you a longer sight radius. The Williams mounts forward so you loose a a good 3 to 4 inches of sight distance

That would explain the resemblance . I did some searching . They were only in business 46-51 if memory serves . It's not a really attractive sight but it's durable , easy to adjust and use and stays put when you're set . As a switch hitter shooter I found mine to be as friendly as any of the Williams FP types . As mentioned it sets just clear of the butter knife-ish bolt handle .

Savage 340 Peep arrived.

There was NO SCREWS!!

Savage 340 Peep arrived. Good thing Im resourceful and have a bunch a guns screws! I pretty quickly found the correct size. (That that threaded and fit factory holes).
Then I had to shorten them to .300 shortened to fit. Then beveled the ends.
Surprisingly, I also had to open the mounting holes on the peep!! I thought that the screws looked kinda large, but as far as I know, they are factory holes. I also had to open the holes to .290, then everything fit perfectly.

The adjustments work nice and smooth so II adjusted the peep to align with the factory partridge rear. Then removed it. I had made and installed a fancy blank! ;)

I was a little skeptable as the sellers pics where... Well lacking. But the peep is in great shape with proper patina. No dents or bangs. Bluing thinning for sure, on the corners and edges. But as it was made over a half century ago, It looks great! (Probably better shape then I am!:p:rofl:
