From safe to target test

Figured what the hay, start a new thread.Am really going to try to keep up with this.

The test: Take a rifle out of the safe, that has been in there "a good while"..... dry mop the bore to remove whatever the hecks' in it(oil,fouling,cobwebs).....

Then grab it's previously loaded/stored ammo and go shoot a cold barrel 3,5,or 10 shot group. The number based on what that particular rig represents.A jacked up,skinny brrl hunting rig typically sees me at 3 or 5.Where a heavy brrl, fatarse scope is more in line shooting 10.

Goals? Mainly curiosity.

OK,that sort of sucked......

Pulled a R700 VS 1/12 308 outta the safe thinking "slam dunk"........ NOT!

Only thing loaded up was 12.5g Trailboss in,junky wore out hand me down cases. There's never been one granual of TB down this brrl. So,testing procedure got slipped a mickey, dang it.

First shot out of group. Then 1/2 dz in a 1/2" hole, throw some flyers in for good measure(10 shots,no waiting between yankin the trigger).OK,now I'm pi$$ed,haha...... got primed matched, prepped cases in a big MTM box looking at me on the bench snickering like a school kid.....

So,first detour from testing procedures is load some decent ammo and shoot. Will do this afternoon.

But now you don't have the random gun outta the safe run what you got on the shelf loaded X time ago ..........

I used to go-to a shoot out west . I set up a 10 shots for score 1 target game . 5 from a pistol , 5 from it's companion rifle/carbine , 1 load , 25 yd. No Contenders etc . There's a tricky game ...... I had a 38/357 rifle and 6" Sec 6 that would have stolen the show but my 45s don't play so nice .. let alone mixing Rugers and Rossi's with 1917s and High Points . Of course if a guy had an original 86' and a BFR 45-70 that was cool too .

I like the idea of "does it still shoot what I loaded 2 yr ago " safe queen reintegration .

The original premise is sound only if I actually have inventory ammo, haha.

The 1st test was valid cause the Traiboss load was prolly 2 years ago.The "fly" or interesting part was, that powder/load had never been shot.

Another "goal" of this test is not only shooting up whatcha got,in some examples these are new loads..... doh.

I had to break out some 4759 for the 308,going for the jugular.

Next rifle is going to come from deep back in the safe.H&R,full stocked 30-30.... this one is gonna really be tricky because; the only thing loaded don't have a recipe on the box? And if that ain't bad enough, the rig is sporting an old K4 Weaver that hasn't been zero'd since mounting 5 years ago. Gonna need a bigger pce of paper, haha

this can get out of hand fast.
I pulled my old Ruger VT out of the 15-16 y.o. cobwebs a few years back and decided to see what it would give me with lead.
that lead to needing an AR-15 with a faster twist barrel since I was told a fast twist barrel wouldn't shoot cast that fast.
still haven't used that Ruger Varmint rig on any Varmints and the third [even faster twist barrel than the first] AR now wears it's scope.

When I first came here, didn't know about any speed limits on cast.Never really hung around cast bullet forums.Maybe CBA site but,am not learned enough to be on there.... and that's not a criticism.

I've been on woodpecker forums like that too....and machinist forums... and motorcycle...and,and,haha.

I finally found the dope on the box of 30-30's that is "on deck". It's a very nice little H&R.I helped a bud who has the stock's parent gun. It is a 22 hornet that came with the full stock. We duped it out of black walnut,he gave me the original stock.I looked through the K4...... like new lenses, woohoo!

Further..... this super sophisticated, lab approved test has proved one thing....my record keeping is uhh, err, well let's just say it is getting a serious injection of organization.

Well, you are pretty close Fiver, things kinda went in a different direction.....

The H&R 30-30 might be going to a Gdaughter. She's 8 and wants to go Deer hunting..... can we say Kirsten Joy Weiss? haha. Wait,it's not a joke?

So,shooting it this a.m. but, testing it now has meaning because it's for some else's benifit. She needs a good solid low recoil,"thumper" to practice with.Too late this upcoming season but will get it set up and let her have her "first gun"..... she can then either keep it,or pass it down to whomever she wants and we'll get her sumthin else out of inventory.

but in the mean time you gots some load details to work out...
Ben should have some good plain base light bullet loads already worked out for paper punching to get her tuned in with the rifle.
then a bullet swap to something a bit heavier for serious work and she should be able to wring everything you can get out of a 30-30.
I guess I should also look in on some plain base light bullet stuff too, I got this Stevens 325-C I need to wring out, I'm not 100% sure about it's firing pin/spring situation, and I can see it going down to a younger generation in a couple of years.

Yup.

The single shot break open "should" get her or any youngin on the fast track.Pretty simple;open action.... look, there's a hole,it goes all the way out the end,see that twist?

Now,put the cartridge in.... only can go one way.... not ready to fire is it?....close the action, pull back hammer, fire.

Look, the case is now empty.... oh yeah, you hit the bullseye.... make fun of your little brother cause he can't.
