Fun with .22 LR and DIY bullet trap and swinger target

One of the more fun days out shooting lately. I get wrapped up in testing and load development too much sometimes. This was just plain FUN!

Nice shooting. Spinners did very well. Would a little more weight help stop the swinging even faster? Maybe weld a little lump of steel on the back?

Love how you had a FTF and instantly looked at your brother with a WTF look.

I think I'm going to take it back to work and weld a 1/4"x2" piece of flat bar across the back of the target. You will still tell you hit it bet the target will only move a few inches and then settle back down much more quickly.

The last time I got to shoot with my FIL before he died we had a nice, lazy range day shooting nothing but rimfire. He brought a few flavors of exotic ammo and between us had six or seven rifles and a couple of handguns, big fun and a memory I cherish. You said a lot when you mentioned it being a welcome break from testing or even just shooting your own handloads; it's hard to to get that constant, critical voice that says "next time try......" regarding the ammo unless youre shooting factory.

I can't believe you got bulk Federal to shoot that well, but Kimber makes a great little rifle.

That is most of the shooting Khornet and I do these days. We kill lots of pop cans, clays, and a nice gong someone made for me.

Like Walter said in the post, testing can get to be a grind. Sometimes shooting for fun is required. Steel or other reactive targets are far more fun than paper.

Walter: I just love the "Brothers" Videos!
I saw a very familiar target in the beginning! You guys have a lot of fun! I wish I could experience range time like that! We can only shoot paper on our range! I love the way you incorporate the target with the shooter! Shows what happened before the shot!
You both got your front rest right on the sweet spot!
Keep them coming!

Got lucky with the bulk Federal. Good thing. I bought a case of it when it was on sale without ever trying it.

Jim. Your comments always make me smile. I’m glad someone out there gets a kick out of them. You’ll see more of your target designs in future videos.

The report from quite a few people I know who stocked up on the $8.88/brick Federal back when that's what it cost are having a very high misfire rates with it now. Not sure how old yours is but when we were teenagers the misfire stats were about 1-2 per brick at the time, same ammo all this time later is now 10-20 % in a lot of cases.

The swingers look like great fun. I have a commercial one, and love to work it over, mostly with .22 pistols at
20 yds or so. If I use it with rifles, I move it back to 30 or so with irons and 40-50 with scopes.
Reactive targets are a good thing. I have a half built dueling tree, should get it finished welded
this spring and get clanging on it. Have CF plates of AF500, so OK for rifles and smaller, lighter .22 RF plates,
drop in change over.

Picked up 500 loose Thunderbolt pack at the GS today, $14.99, no tax. Haven't shot them yet, will see
how good they are. Cheapest I have seen in a LONG time.

Great groups with the rifles, too.

I was amazed to see such results from Federal .22 too, the misfire didn't surprise me either. Great shooting by the way, it looks like you had a great day!

those red box americans have been my go to for a long time.
I really used to like the Winchester wildcat's but they are hard to find around here so I started using other stuff and settled in on the americans.
apparently I wasn't the only one they are real popular around here, I traded a brick of them for a pound of RL-19 during the powder shortage.

Thanks Jim. We try to keep them short, to the point , and hopefully entertaining. We have fun doing them. I really forgot how much fun just plinking with the .22's can be. That little swinger target is gonna be fun with 22 pistols as well.

waco, College Boy and I just watched a couple of your videos. He was quite impressed. He has a fascination with long range shooting. I'm impressed with both your shooting and your videography.
