G/C Wadcutter Mould

I think y'all might be surprised. What I'm about to show you are bullets cast from either 16 to 1 or 20 to 1, I don't remember. They are really soft. You drop one on the floor and it dents it bad. The nose punch leaves a good mark on it. Here's the 10mm 180 grain that I swage a pent point hollowpoint into after I have free checked with soda can aluminum. The velocity is mighty close to 1200 fps. Shot into a plastic container stuffed tight with paper and soaked for a day. Shot at dang near point blank range. Used two pistols, a long slide 6 inch barrel Glock and longslide 6 inch barrel 1911. Here's the pics:

Notice the free check is still on them. I can show you 45 2.1 129 grain 9mm hollow point cast from the same alloy and tested the same way if you want.

Ben, I have the same mold, but in a plain base. Bought it new about 4 years ago.

The marking on the side of my mold is the same as yours, 359 130W, catalog number 36-130W.

The gas check version is now listed as 36-130WG.

I have only shot mine over a little bit of Bullseye for plinking.

I would try them without the check, heck I'd try them upside down.
I push the little lyman 148gr button nose cutter up to some pretty high velocity's the 358091 I want to say without going and looking.
I didn't think there was any way on earth it was gonna shoot that well at 1200 or better in a revolver.

no check and a pinch of titegroup might not be too bad a load, that combination works well enough in my 41 to hunt bunny's with it.

What did you make the nose punch out of?

Will I used the pent pin that Mihec moulds come with. The hollow point moulds come with a cone pin, pent pin, and a blank pin to cast a solid. I drilled my nose punch for the pent pin.

I like it. The check lets you use soft, malleable alloy without worrying about damaging the base.

That's what I though too Ian. What surprised me is how those free checks really clamp onto the bullet not only in the expansion test, but also finding them in my backstop dirt even after going through some wood. I've see less take a Hornady check off. Easier then heck to make them and install them on the bullet while your lube/size them.
I use the washer method not modifying the sizer die. Some pics:

You cut that washer to be a snug fit inside your sizer retaining nut. It's not real thick little over 3/16ths. You then make a die to cut discs that are an exact fit in that recess on the washer. Sometimes to help them stay there I put a dab of lube in that groove. The disc side of course points down over tip the sizer die.. Then you merely size/lube your bullets in the normal manner and they are free checked too! That green disc is cut from venetian blind slats. Nothing goes to waste at my house. Normally I use the soda can aluminum.

Hey Ben, I just had another thought about that mould, I wonder if someone was having the eternally high POI problems I was having with my .38s and wanted a lighter bullet to shoot more to the sights, but also wanted a target wadcutter design. That doesn't totally explain the reason for the gas check shank, though. I'm curious how these print for you if you decide to try any out in your revolvers.

Yes Ian, I'll be shooting them just as soon as things warm up here.
You may be onto something with your theory for cutting this particular mold in this manner ? ? ? I really don't know why the orig. owner had the mould cut in this manner ?
The temperatures are in the 20's at night and 50's in the day here right now. If I can get a bit of a warm up , then I'm headed to the range with these. Will take photos of the targets and share load data with all of your also.

A lot of good theories.
Any one of them could be the reason the orig. owner made the mould ?

Fiver, only them southern boys need a warmup to get out of the 50s.
They don't even have thermometers that go sub zero.

When zero happens in Texas it's like Ron White said, "This place doesn't appear to HAVE a temperature".

You guys want a warm up, come down and visit me about August 15th, you'll get your warm up, along with about a 90% humidity level :)

I can stay home around then and have very similar conditions.

See Ben and fiver, here in Nebraska we get close to Ben summers and close to fiver winters.

I want a place to live where it is 55-60 all year. I am willing to accept occaisonal periods of 60-70. But I'm not picky....

Brad,

I hope you find it.
Find a place where the house next door is empty for Sandy and I.

But don't tell anyone else, I don't want to be over crowded either.
