Ben, I just got done reading that plain base bullets always lead the barrel unless they are HARDCAST, and even then you can't push them more than 800 fps or use them in any rifle! It's on the internet, it's got to be TRUE!!!
Yet try to get anyone to tell you what hardcast means. It would be a great thread on a different site. Ask what is meant by "hardcast", and wait for the Tower of Babel to fall. Spice it up with follow up questions like "so how hard is a hard cast bullet?".

I was skoolt by a self annoited demi deity that hard cast is any alloy that has anything in it other than lead and tin.
That's kind of vague since some WW dilutions are softer than 16-1. No ?

Deities are hard to argue with. That whole omnipotent/omniscient/omnipresent thing totally gets in the way of meaningful discussion.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Sarcasm boys, sarcasm! You will see people here following the hardcast myth even when you tell them plainly it just ain't so. It's their time to waste, let them have at it. Same thing with people writing books on cast that say the little variables don't add up who then do photo essays that probe the little variables do add up. People believe what they want to believe!

I wouldn’t call hardcast a myh, it just isn’t the answer in all cases either.
Do you need a 22 BHn bullet in all situations? Nope. Don’t need Linotype or Lyman 2 either.

Hardcast is a marketing tool. The big bullet casters like their alloy as it ships well. Casts nicely in machines too. Nobody wants wrinkly bullets with lots of dents from shipping so they use what they use. Same reason lots use a crayon lube as well.

We, as the casters, can control what we use. We can use “lesser” alloys and lubes because we can handle our little bullets with care. We can also adjust size to fit our gun.

Lots of people have really good results with far harder bullets than I use. More power too them. Just shows their are many ways to skin the cat.

My suggestion is always the same-see what works for you and your gun. Don’t be too shocked if different alloys behave in different ways based on load. Don’t be shocked if things like PC make you change up how you do things.

I use mostly range scrap because I can get it free for my labor. I have lots of it and can replace it readily. Imagine that, I work out loads and methods that fit my alloy. I could do just as well with most any alloy but have optimized for my shooting with my alloy.

Over the years I've shot thousands of plain base rifle bullets in the 14-1600 fps range with no problems. Some higher than that with PC. Mostly 25-20, 38-55, 30-30 and 308. Guess I need to find out how this stuff is supposed to work.

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
I have more 8mm copper gas checks than I could use in a lifetime. I can part with a box of 1k if someone needs them.

that sounds familiar but my version says Ideal and only has 5 numbers.
I'd go check but it's on loan at the moment.
My old Uncle Bub was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a bullet caster when I was just a little boy. I remember him standing outside the old farm house, over the Coleman stove ladling silvery lead into that mould. I have it now, just a single cavity. He was using it when he lived with us around 1960-62. I remember his admonition to put the casting gear away if it looked like rain because the lead could explode if water hit the pot. Good enough description to impress a six year old boy who had to have his beak into everything the adults were doing.

When Unc passed at 88, I slipped a freshly cast 321297 into the casket with him.

Speaking of FCIII (22 Cal), I ordered a couple rolls of .008 Cu (each is 4" wide, 40" long) for $8 plus $2 shipping, listed on fleabay, sourced from China, seller was in Canada (so I got a good money exchange rate), While I figured it was being shipped from China, the package arrived in 2 weeks having a New York State return address?

Normally I use .008 Alum Lith plate, but a discussion at the other forum mentioned sourcing Cu on fleabay, so I had to check it out and make an order to see what I get. It seems like an OK price, and the shiny Cu roll sure looks purty, My test punches said I should get 1250 to 1440 GC's (22 Cal) per $10 Roll.

Speaking of Opinions, way back before the second astroid hit the earth ( c-19), I was following Ben's use of PB bullets, I decided to try a PB 311 299 in my Remington 700 VS .308, I believe it was pushed along with 9.3 grains of Universal, the load produced a 3/8" group and continues to do so, so much so I stopped using it for awhile, because in my opinion it became boring.Needless to say , given the current situation,my opinion has changed. what's not to like , no GC's needed , no seating of GC's and sizing is a joy, PLUS it takes FOREVER to get to the bottom of a pound of powder using only 9.3 grains per load. My opinion of getting older also changed when I realized that forgetting stuff has it's advantages, again way back when I forgot I had.30 GC'S and ordered more. I am now sitting on about 7K and have exactly the same number of LR primers.things are good in the new dark age. One last note, I remember when Ben got his Free Check tool and commented "that if something happened and he couldn't get checks he could always make them", My thought at the time was, " that's alittle out there" ,BUT HERE WE ARE, WAY TO GO BEN!.
