Trevor, count yourself a luck dog. I only had a Lyman book to help me.

1112211521-1.jpgThese were my first.
Cast them in 1977. They leaded the barrel so bad it took a bunch of years before trying again.
I kept a few so I could figure out what I did wrong. ...........I'm learning.

I missed this thread somehow...

Great to see Trevor getting the full treatment in his education! He has one heck of a mentor too!

Welcome, @Jwatts8815 ! Missed your arrival on the scene also and catching up now that "business" is on hold for the holiday.

Careful. These guys will talk you into anything. You'll be looking for a place to store moulds, dies, lube & most other things having to do with cast. They are pushers the whole lot of them.

THAT from one of the wisest of the wise here, @Jwatts8815 - don't trust any of 'em or you'll end up with a lifelong educational pursuit which will keep you off the streets, build character and make you a better person and marksman. If you have an aversion to any of the preceding traits, just run now.;)

Excellent company here, from my perspective.

Haha, sounds fantastic to me!! I actually JUST received my very first iron mold from Accurate today, the 45-230L, I’m pumped to put it to work this weekend for my 1911. Floored by the quality of it.

Huh. I designed that one, pretty sure it was my first Accurate mould from about a decade ago. Seat it to 1.265" overall length, and make sure your 1911 will chamber it. By pure dumb luck it ended up being the most accurate bullet of about a dozen in my .45s.

Tom's iron moulds are among the very best moulds ever made.

Well, I can’t wait to give it a go!! Looking at their catalog, I was most interested by that bullet for 45 acp. I have a Dan Wesson Specialist that eats absolutely everything so I’m sure it’ll be great. It is absolutely the nicest mold I own, I’m waiting on a .454 mold from him for my Vaquero too!! Another iron, can’t remember the catalog number but it’s THE 255 grain Keith bullet

No iron moulds here from Tom, just brass and aluminum. They all are amazing.

Banner on the forum is a brass mould from Tom and the bullets from it. My 375 likes them.

I’m very new at this and to be completely honest with you, I’m drawn to iron molds bc of their durability, I can beat on em a bit and not worry too much. I did just get my first “ nicer “ aluminum mold, a RG NOE mold for my 10mm. I’ll give brass a go soon I’m sure

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute, here!

What happened to the rules??

I thought we were supposed to bang our heads against the wall with crappy moulds for twenty years, blaming ourselves and the state of the world for our failures before we were allowed to have decent moulds!!;)

Rules? We don’t need to steenkin rules!

I will admit that once I learned what moulds could, and should, be I haven’t used a Lyman in years. Might also be my penchant for 4 cav moulds that don’t weigh 5 tons.

I do feel bad for people who, like I did, struggle to makes sorely undersized moulds work.

It's good to see someone benefit from others' mistakes instead of repeating them. Using my dad's moulds when I was growing up was a breeze. When I started buying my own, I bough the same brand, or so I thought. Took me a long time to realize the ones which didn't also say "Ideal" on them weren't the same stuff.

Trevor's getting the best mentor - and first-hand at that, but anyone visiting this forum - and paying attention - should be able to avoid many mistakes which will cost dollars and years of frustration.
