Greek Breda Mannlicher action

A few years ago at the wonderful Chisholm Trail gun show in Wichita, I bought a complete action off a table simply because I know they are good actions and it was just too darn cheap to pass up. That cool rotary magazine and the trigger pull is surpisingly good for a military trigger sold me. Didn't really have a plan for it.

I kind of figured a nice, old school Mannlicher sorter with a butterknife handle, etc., was the way to go, but lately, been thinking of something more useful, cheaper to put together and not really changing anything about the action in case me or someone else wanted to do something with it later.

Always was intrigued by the scout rifle concept, and while I wouldn't be the Jeff Cooper purist about it, a forward scope mounted to the barrel would nicely solve the scope mounting problems with that receiver. I was thinking a relatively short, relatively fat, possibly fluted barrel. Are any semi inletted stocks available for these or how hard would it be to make one?

As to caliber, I have heard where those rotary mages are somewhat specific to caliber and while 6.5x54 MS is a good cartridge, something a bit more main stream is in order I think. I'll probably get flamed by traditionalists (which, deep down, I am one), but I've become kind of a fan of the 6.5 Creedmoor as a deer cartridge, would that be close enough to the 6.5x54 MS to work without modifications?

Thoughts? Has anyone ever sporterized one of these?

I had to look that action up. No experience with one, but I am interested in your project.

Roaming the interwebs, I saw this one. Complete with the butter knife bolt handle.

That would be a snazzy setup.

Looking up the cases:

It doesn't look like the length would be an issue for the magazine. Are rimmed cartridges required to work in the rotary magazine? How much work would the bolt face require to accommodate a rimless cartridge?

Answering my own question by reading the whole thread in the link I posted, one of the guys shot one converted to .257 Roberts, he said his brother had one in 7x57 Mauser. So I guess rimless cartridges aren't an issue. Sounds like the actions/rifles can be valuable, per the discussion in that thread.

These were chambered in 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoneur (SP) not that 6.5 Dutch, they were set up for rimless cartridges. Rotary mags seem more sensitive to cartridge dimensions, though, but if one could work easily in 7x57, that would be a better choice for me, love the cartridge.

I grabbed the wrong cartridge diagram. Sorry about that, I updated my post for what I think is the correct one.

Looking forward to what you decide to do with your action.

Yeah, it may be years down the road. They really are slick actions. The thought crossed my mind to try to bring it back to military spec, but I bet that would be a difficult and lengthy endeavor.
