H&R 32/20 fun

I have been neglecting the few I have left lately. (No they wouldn’t fit in the safes they went over the back of the boat!!)

This one is a custom. It was built by a good friend on another forum and it’s a good shooter. He used a donor 20g and a take off SMLE barrel. Fit to stub then chambered 32/20. BarreL was left 22” scopes with a Bushnell 6x TV view in Leupold rings and a Steel base.

I stocked it in black laminated factory wood. Fully free floated fore stock.

I was loaned a milhec mold couple
Months back. Only the mold I got was not what I was looking for. Turned out to be a 311-140 HP mold. One regular and Penta HP pin. I cast up some but not allot. After It was swapped for the one I should have gotten I remembered it might be a dandy for the 32/20 SS!!

Yesterday I decided to load some up. Probably is there is no data for bullets more than 120g in this caliber.

This is a real strong action so Not allot of worries as long as I was smart. I started with AA1680. It’s pretty slow and I probably cannot get enough in the case to over pressure it. 9.0 was my start and 12 my max.

No pressure signs noticed. BUT 11.5 showed velocity swings and usually that a tell your getting close to dangerous.

I think I’ll stick with 10.5g. But gonna run a .1g ladder starting @10 going to 11g. SD was SINGLE digits up to 11g.

Nah. Old brass may be fragile loading but means almost nothing to actual pressures. At least as it pertains to pressures I’m working with in. (Probably <2X Factory 32/20) The brass is merely the vessel to hold the powder. The gun is the strength. Zero worries. This is a SB2 receiver and a substantial diameter in the barrel at the chamber. Back thrust not as much as the BO and pressures estimated sub 40K. I may see some stretching if the thin necks. Time will tell but it’s not that hot a load even for these paper thick neck brass. :)

Agreed it’s very close in volume. I astually resisted the lil Black our cause I shot and loaded 32/20’s!! ;)

I know my pressure has surpassed the 32/20 realm. But I’m happy with 1350-1380 and that bullet. It will do everything I want.

I haven’t bought the CFE BLK. IMHO it’s more costly than 1680 and dosent some anything appreciably better accept cost ya more! Plus I been using AA1680 for over a decade. I have it I know what it does and it works exceptionally well in these lil cases as well as the Blackout and the Maximum. All witch I shoot allot of.
I’d venture if one didn’t shoot lighter then 130/135g you wouldn’t need any other powder for the black out than 1680. (Same
Said for the CFE BLK now)

I run 145gr with H110 at 2k fps in carbine but PP don't last long - ~50k psi. Cfeblk has slower pressure curve. Both 1680 & blk are dirty at low loads. I ran cfe pistol and A-2400 slow in bo pistol for light recoil -aka fast recovery - with 145 & 170gr, like 2400 better. They run about 13-1400 fps, kinda got the loads comparing 32 20. Have wanted a RB or FB to tinker with in small cartridge but gave up on that - would be a nice project rifle while everything is closed down. really nice rifle, I don't appreciate break actions much - nor bolts - just my preference.

Why such a heavy bullet? What are you hunting with it?
First of all. I like heavy bullets. Im not a light bullet fan boy.

second My rifle has a SMLE barrel. It’s made for heavier bullets than typically used in the 32/20.
