I'm trying to get a rifle ready for my 9 year old grandson, Trevor.
I think ( if he can shoot it well ? ? ) we'll go with the Handi , .44 Mag., with a Burris 1.75 X 5 variable. ( A woods rifle ! ! ! )

We hunt from a " shooting house ". Shots will be between
25 yards and a max. of 70 yards.

Fiver suggested 9.0 of Unique with the Accurate " V " series , 262 gr. bullet sized .432" . I think I'll start things off with 10 rounds with 9.0 of Unique and 10 rounds with 10.0 grs. of Unique. We'll see if there is a difference in performance ? ?

I'm anxious to get Trevor to the range with this rifle.

So....10 grains it is! Scope or not, groups like that don't come easily from a pistol-caliber Handi rifle.

Select the shot and it will be a dead deer.
So Ben, how are his knife skills for field depressing?

He has zero skills in that arena.
He has never hunted anything before.
He is 9 yrs. old. Gotta start somewhere.

I have a feeling he will get a chance to see an old pro handle the task well and explain as he does the job.

Looks like the first step to venison jerky.
My oldest son loves jerky, so when he shot his first deer, he jerked just about the entire deer. He still makes some every year.

Dressing, depressing, close enough.

Fiver, you are starting to sound like Ian and I do not mean that in a nice way.:headbang:

Both of my grands watched as grampa gutted their first. They know any more and they will be holding the knife. With supervision.
Ben by any chance did Trevor do the camo paint job on that rifle. How awesome would that be to show of a picture of your first deer killed with grampa with the rifle that he painted.

Very nice Ben.

The H&R we have is a 30-30.... it's ready for the Gdaughter to start shooting. Nice lite CB loads.

Jerky; used to make gourmet deer jerky for the boys. The oldest and I would take it DANG serious..... the middle boys were just cute as a button at about 3y.o. They wore those little Oshkosh overalls pretty much night N day. Only thing was, they would have the top pocket stuffed with jerky..... Folks would ooh and ahhh, aren't they cute. Then they'd reach in for another "chew" and blow the whole Gerber baby thing slam outta the water.....Haha.

Paul,

Thanks, I thought about 7 mm and .30 cal. but I feel the large meplat on this bullet will work in his favor vs. the smaller calibers.
