Ian points out an important optics aspect regarding light transmission--magnification vis-a-vis objective lens diameter. You have likely noticed that binoculars usually are listed as "7 x 35", "8 x 40/42", "10 x 50". That is not accidental; it is related to that 5mm pupillary expansion in low light environments. An optical device's light transmission ability to the human eye is maximized by that "exit pupil" (sometimes called the "light pencil") that gets delivered to the viewer. The 1-to-5 magnification-to-objective lens diameter relationship is intended to optimize light transmission to the viewing user. No free lunch, to paraphrase P & P.

Regarding that Win M-21.......post-war skeet gun, not a pre-war Tournament Skeet variant. It is all there, EXCEPT (expletives deleted) some previous owner sawed off 3" of buttstock length and installed a Pachmayr vented pad. It is WAY too short for me, and though the pad work is very well done such things are only incrementally less obnoxious to me than Poly-Chokes on a Model 12. Hard pass, IOW. 26", Skeet 1/Skeet 2 chokes, I think it was hunted with rather than shot competitively. Bank-vault-solid lockup. It is at ASK Defensive Training in Redlands, CA if someone is interested. 909/307-1400.

Is the Swarovski worth it? I can't tell you if it will be worth it to YOU.
If I could get the features I wanted: the right magnification, the right reticle, the right weight & size.....It would .probably be worth it. It's a one time purchase and a critical piece of gear.
However, if the question is: "Should I get the Swarovski now or wait for the Leupold that I want"? The answer is an absolute - Wait and get what you want. It is a ONE time purchase. Don't get in a hurry just to compromise for what's available now.

Allen got a good deal on a Swarovski AND got what he wanted. That's not the same as settling for what's in the display case because you want it now.

As for beating up a high quality scope, I don't think it's wise to abuse any equipment but a good scope will take more abuse than a cheap one. It might look a little rough on the outside after a few years but if it's still intact internally, who cares?

Fiver - NOT what you are asking for, but... IF you are looking for another ~$200ish to get you thru for awhile... I have a Vortex Copperhead 4-12x44 to part with. Take-off from the FAL I bought (knew it wouldn't last long!). I'd certainly let it go right

I think that's what it's wearing now.
maybe it's the diamondback, whichever it is I had just enough cash in the bill fold to cover it when I bought the rifle, so it couldn't have cost too much.

Fiver,
I have Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 scopes on all of my rifles except two older mil surplus and the 22Lr,s
Once they are sighted in and a chart for distance they are excellent.
Bought most of them used and sent to Leupold to refurbish.
Have never had a problem with one and they all have seen pretty rough
treatment. I do not think you can go wrong with them

Just second the house and get a high end Schmidt & bender.
it's cash and carry, or forget it now-days.

yeah Rod, I've been looking at the VX-3I's.
it's just right now??? shrug
I'm in no rush, but it'd be nice to have it this summer.
