Henry .410 lever action

Anybody own one? I've been knocking around the idea of getting one, but they just feel heavy to me, about like an 1895 Marlin in .45-70. Seems to me they could have knocked some weight off it with a shorter barrel. I know some here don't like the tube feed, but I kinda see that as an asset. They are $900 locally but saw one at the Fleet Farm in Fargo, ND that is selling all in-stock guns at 10% off currently. Even have the wifes approval!!

Just my opinion, but all the CF Henrys seem extremely heavy to me. I've held the 410 and it's a boat anchor. Probably great for teaching a kid to shoot a shotgun as the weight would soak up recoil, but there's the question of even finding 410's these days and then being able to afford them. My local shop says the best they've found is over a buck a shell THEIR cost!!!

I own 2 410's now and I have maybe a box an half of shells. I haven't seen any 410's for sale in a couple years locally outside of some slugs and self defense buckshot.

Thanks Popper, I did not know there was the short barrel version, only knew about the long barrel and the composite version. I just hadn’t done the research. Turns out the short barrel version is a tad less weight, has rifle sights, and choked improved cylinder (fixed), so three things I prefer over the long barrel. Called the place I do business with and they couldn’t get one. Went on Gun broker and found a store 50 miles from me has five in stock, so I have them holding one until tomorrow, if I can get out of my driveway. We just got about 17 inches of snow the last two days and still coming down.

Brett,
No shortage of .410’s at my place. I’ve been loading/casting slugs and shot shells. Brewing on some buckshot loads next.

Arrrrrrgh! Shotshell loading! I have a 410 Mec sitting in the loading room. If I could find hulls, and if I have or could find the right wads, and if I still have the shotshell primers from 1983 and IF I could find any shot and a big bucket of time, I could probably put together something that at least goes bang. Way, way too many things on my to do list!!! But you're right, loading your own is the answer.

I had the same problem scrounging enough hulls of any one kind that most seem to have. Finally broke down and bought 500 primed Cheddite 2.5” from Bpi. They were .16 each when I bought them and .20 now already. Bought a 1000 16 gauge, also primed Cheddte, because the Rio hulls I’d bought were just a little longer and I got an occasional fail to eject in my A5 sixteen gauge. I’ll shoot the Rio’s in my other sixteens.
The real shocker is the current price tag of $65 on hard shot. Ouch!

Thats what I did as well. Even got last couple bags already primed.

Then found some online for fair cost. Seller was super guy and after a few back and fourth conversations he sent me a good supply. Many was pretty bad 3" hulls but worked fine cause I dont need 2.5" for my two ball loads so I just trimmed off nastys.

Yeah boy, the costs of things are not what they used to be! Makes ya wonder about making your shot too. My understanding is that that endeavor has been known to drive men mad!!!

My full-octagon/brass receiver Big Boy .45 Colt is a tank. I don't know how much it weighs but a lot more than my Marlins. I personally have a couple of .410s (Model 42 and 37 Winchesters) and as little as I use either the lever Henry kind of makes me scratch my head. Might be really good for squirrels in an area where shooting up is a bad idea, I love my old 37 single-shot full choke with #6s for blasting moving tree rats for the pot.

Opened up driveway enough to go get the Henry. They had four of the 20” version and let me pick the one I liked best.
Got it home and cleaned it up some, fired 5 shotshells and five slugs to make sure it functioned correctly. Fired the first slug into my snow covered backstop, just to make a hole to shoot at. Was surprised all five went into a fist sized group at about 32 yards, shooting offhand, with factory sight settings.
To me the difference in feel and balance between the 24” bbl version and this 20” version is day and night. The 20” bbl I got feels and looks much like a 336 Marlin. Think I’m going to get along fine with this gun.
Bret,
I’ve been pondering a shot maker for quite some time now still not sure I’ll get one.
