Home Defense

Americans are now buying a gun every 2 seconds, many to defend their homes.

I realize that the answers we get on this one will spread across a broad spectrum, BUT.........
In your opinion, what is the ideal Home Defense weapon and WHY ?

12 gauge pump shotgun. Loaded with birdshot.

Number one factor, EVERYONE knows the sound of racking a pump shotgun.
Birdshot to prevent excessive penetration. Ranges will be short, damage will be massive.

12 ga. shotgun...make mine a pump too!!! As Brad said, just the sound of racking the pump is going to change some minds in itself.

Ton's of ammo to choose from and much of it is oriented just for home defense. There are reduced vel.and recoil loads available commercially for those with low recoil tolerance.

I'm close to your views Brad and 35 Shooter.
No doubt that in America , the 12 Ga. has been and will continue to be king.

However, to accommodate a woman a 20 ga. might be a better choice.
At 10 feet, just how much killing power is needed to take out a bad guy.

For a good experienced male shooter, the 20 ga. is still going to offer a quicker back up 2nd round, 3rd , etc. , etc. if there are multiple attackers.

I vote for the 20 ga. Pump, with 18.5 " barrel.

I went 12 as I own one, my wife owns one, and even my daughter has fired one.
A 20 would do as well.

The best is what you have in hand, the worst is the one not in hand when need arises.

Wow ! !
That pretty well sums it up.
I tell people a home defense gun is like a parachute, if you don't need it , the thing
is just in the way.

BUT......when you do need it, you need it real bad ! !

I don't worry about "over" penetration.... A 590 fully stocked with Brenneke slugs has stood by my door for over twenty years.

My first line of defense is frequent gunfire from my range near the house. People around me have experienced some petty theft throughout the years, but so far not my place, and I'm the only one who shoots regularly. Everyone who lives around here knows I have guns and know how to use them.

Failing that, there's a 12-gauge pump shotgun near every outside door of the house, loaded with Super X 00-buckshot. I can't think of any more universal show of force than a pump 12-gauge...everyone gets it, there is no language barrier when that gaping tube is pointed at your face and the dude (or dudette) wielding it means business. Handguns hidden in plain sight in each room of the house, and plenty of other things I won't go into. Main thing is my wife or I can have a weapon in hand in five seconds from any point in the home.

It might seem paranoid, but we live near a very trashy community and have had more than a few unwelcome trespassers over the years. Well armed and with a plan, there's little need for paranoia.

I prefer a 12 ga. Remington 870 with short barrel, cylinder choke and a magazine extension. I keep mine loaded with #4 buck shot. We also keep a couple of .357 revolvers and a .45 ACP S&W loaded and close by. Tony

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
First line of defense is the dogs. I own 2 dogs. My wife and kids account for the other dozen or so. Yes, you read that right and all but 3 of them are in the house at least at night. 2nd line would be the "Triangle of death", which is our house the 2 close neighbors house. Some one is going to see people anywhere near the houses and we all know when something weird is going on. 3rd line, cripes! It's like the man said, what ever is handy.

The ideal home defense weapon would be a nation overflowing with good, decent people with strong moral and ethical character, who would never even consider screwing with someone else so that the rest of us would never have to consider home defense!

I worry about over penetration. How many walls do you think I want to need to patch up? I mean I already have blood splatter on the walls and a pool of blood on the floor to clean up. The county can haul off the trash but it's me that needs to clean up the mess that trash left behind.

"Good, decent people with strong moral and ethical character". Sounds good Bret . . . Until reality sets in.

Pretty much what goes on here......I relocated here and within two months.....I met my neighbor, a Sheriff Deputy, when I inadvertently set my house alarm off with the remote fob. In our conversations, he mentioned that he hears me shooting, quite a bit. No laws or ordinances against it.

Bella the Boxer, aka Rick's girlfriend, gives us a heads up if anyone uninvited comes around. That is, except Rick.

My other constant companion, is the 5 shot, laser equipped, alloy framed revolver in my pocket. Arkansas is CC, friendly and both of us have taken advantage of that right. Not leaving loaded guns, scattered about the house....too much trouble to put them away when leaving the house.

I would agree with the shotgun. A pump would be nice but I have my old double ready. It got #3 buck in it but I kind of like Brad's Birdshot concept
