So I sat down this afternoon to make a little headway on f/l sizing 955 pcs of new to me 30-30 brass.

Then I heard the dreaded POP!!!:confused:o_OThought I'd have a stuck case to remove. Nope!!! My trusty rcbs shell holder had been converted into garbage. :(

The nice folks at rcbs said they'd send me a new one. It didn't break the case rim. Here I sit without a spare. Bummer. First shell holder I've ever converted.

Bummer, never seen that before. That 30-30 is pretty tough brass huh? o_O I think I'll look at my number 2 and see if maybe they are made a little thin.

If it can be broken, dismantled, or mangled I'll figure out how.

Will have spares for all of my calibers soon.

I guess I was so shocked because, I figured one of my Lee's would go first.

Never seen that happen before either, must have been mis-heat-treated.

Dude, use some size lube already!

I have never heard of that happening. Someone needs to lay off the Wheaties

Been loading for well over 50 years and I have never seen that happen. Like Brad says you need to lube (full Length)! Have ripped a rim off a 30-30 from years back, and learned to use enough lube ever since.

Some people just have to be difficult.
I was taught using STP as a case lube, hate the stuff. Leaves a horrendously sticky residue on everything but it does work.
Yes, size lube. Case lube. Call it what you want but dammit son, use some!

freebullet try Unique, good stuff.
Same stuff I use.

And NO, not the powder. Rick, ya gotta remember this guy enjoys shooting in cold temps. Something is just plain wrong with the boy.

Hehehe....
They were lubed well w/lanolin olive oil alcohol mix. No excessive pressure.
Had sized, lubed, & loaded a couple thousand through it.

So if I slide the decapper rod up I could probably get a few grains of Unique in there to blow the case out of the die. Is that what you mean?

FB, do you have a Lee turret press? If you do you can just take the die out of the QC bushing, screw it in the die head, put a fresh shell holder in the ram with the opening pointed to the side and rotate the turret head until the rim slides into the shell holder, then yank the case out.

Nah no turret or lee press at the moment but, thanks for the tip. Got a universal lee set this eve.
The lee removed the case without any drama or damage to the case. I just started it in the press and push it on the case as it slid up/in. Worked like a champ.

I didn't have to try Rick's sketchy sounding unique case blowout method.

Yeah, I was wondering how you were going to light the powder, guess you could have seated a primer once you got the new shellholder, repositioned the decapping pin, and made a mortar tube out of some pvc pipe, endcap, and drywall screw..........if you managed to survive the shrapnel and find where the die finally fell to earth you'd be in business!

I like the fact that the hardened steel RCBS shell holder saved the brass case by failing first. Who would have guessed? "Murphy's law" in practice.

talk about speeding things now Ricks charging the cases before he even re-sizes them.
next he's gonna tell us how to meter powder and case lube into a baggie and squish everything around to get it all done at once.
