Sweet! I might try picking up a 788 in 30-30 from a guy at work if things play out.

The 788 is definitely the holy grail of bolt action rifles chambered in 30-30. Only problem is everyone I find has a huge price tag attached to it.

I can’t find a mark on it fiver. It’s aluminum and I’m afraid it has some flex to it.

that's too bad,, dang.
I was thinking an M-14 or Garand wrap around cheek pad and that munt would work pretty well together.

I’m gonna give it a try.

Anybody had any luck putting a little jump to the lands with these rifles?

Every 30 cal I bullet I have isn’t touching anything when seated to mag length.

Had a pre-serial number Savage 340, for a while. It had feeding and ejection problems that the gunsmith and I couldn't fix. An original magazine helped the feeding a mite, however a new ejector and its spring didn't improve that function.

I liked the rifle, it really like the Lee group buy 311-41, but it was moved on down the line.

Can't recall the scope mount make, but it steel and used the factory holes.

it's an NEI I had Walt cut years back.
fortunately Lyman also makes a copy the 311466. [about 150grs.]
they also make the 465 at about 120grs and the 467 at about 175grs

I’m gonna try the MP 308 hunting, Noe 311041, and the AM 31-165RG.

If that doesn’t work out I guess I’ll have to buy a mold or bum some bullets to try then buy a mold.

I’m really shooting for full velocity with this one. I’d like to be around 2300fps.

you can go over that by 100 fps, the 30-30 will go faster with cast than jacketed.
you don't even have to try for it you just do so.

I got a scope mounted up on it yesterday and gave it a good cleaning. The bolt seems to be a lot more slick now although still a little more rough than I’m used too.

Dug out 50 new pieces of Winchester brass and ran them through the RCBS cowboy dies. I think my first go around I’ll try a load workup with Win 748 the MP 308 hunting bullet and a standard federal primer.

Got to shoot a little bit today. The rifle seems like it wanted to shoot but for some reason shoots the first shot high in every group. There was maybe 8 min in between each group and it was 55 deg. Barrel was still warm when I started each group but not hot.

These were all shot at 100yds using the MP 308 hunting bullet sized at .310” that weighs 153gr checked and lubed. Bullets were cast of 50/50 coww/soww and heat treated at 400deg for 1 hour and then water quenched. Loaded in new Winchester brass using RCBS cowboy dies and the .309” expander.

I chronographed the 38.6gr load and it was running 2460fps. If I could figure that first shot out I’d be ready to put one in a deer next week.
