I finally got one! 788, 30/30

The 30/30 WCF might be the best 30 caliber cast bullet rifle cartridge ever birthed. The "problem" with having a 30/30-chambered Rem 788 is that any possible "alibi" for inaccurate performance just disappeared. 788s can REALLY shoot. My 30/30s have all been leverguns, so far. I have always wanted a bolter or a single-shot to really wring the caliber out with. One of these days.

I love the 30WCF in a bolt rifle; probably believe it is the best cast bullet rifle caliber
If I ever find the money I am going to have one of those fancy dropaction single shot heavy custom rifles made with a 26 -28" barrel in 30-30 as my retirement rifle

I was well on the way to getting my new 788 to the range. I have the stock refinished hanging out in the shop, the new recoil pad is laying on the workbench and I’ve cast up several of my favorite 30 cal bullets to feed it. I even ordered a one piece scope base and a new scope. I had good intentions and now everything is on hold because of this....

Rotator cuff surgery and six weeks of therapy before I can get back to it. Thanks for all the responses to the thread. I will have many ideas and loads when I get back to it.

They will send you to physical therapy. It is boring as heck but important. Do what they tell you times 2. It works.

Thanks, I had my other shoulder done 18 months ago. It is back to 100% and followed my doctor and therapist instructions to the letter.

While my 30-30 ISN'T a bolt gun JW, it does love cast. This is a 1885 Winchester Highback clone by Uberti. Weighs 11# and has a 32" barrel. With the peep sight and my reloads I can consistently hit a 10" plate at 100 yrds off a bench.30-30 Uberti.jpg30-30 Uberti2.jpg

Gary,
Now that is nice! Sort of what I wanted for a retirement rifle! Do they still sell them?

Good luck with the shoulder brother. I passed on a savage 340 in 30-30, think about that often. Those uberti's are good looking guns, they make sharps and rolling blocks or pedersoli maybe.

My understanding is that Pdersoli makes the Uberti's. At any rate JW, I don't think the Highwall is made in 30-30 any longer, mainly the 45-70.

Yeah I figured as much!
I got a quote already from E. Arthur Brown for one of his drop blocks in 30-30 w/28" barrel Will have globe front and Tang sights!

Price however is an issue but it may be the last rifle I buy Don't think I would need anything more for target shooting! With hundreds of 30 cal cast bullets to choose from I'm sure I would not run out of useable combinations
