I need a bigger hammer

.308 Win for now. If it works I'll probably shoot it until it's gone, if not, KAK .358 Win 16" midlength gas is on the list.

Whole thing with an empty magazine and no optics weighs exactly eight pounds. 18" barrel and 15" FF handguard with full top rail. Scope and mounts should bring it up to 9 lb 7 oz, and suppressor will total it out at 10-1/2 pounds unloaded. Heavy, but not too bad, and the can is always optional.

The two-stage trigger isn't working out. I don't know if P80 has their jig holes out of whack, or it's PSA's gen II changes, or what but the hammer won't go past cock far enough for the bolt carrier to cycle. With the hammer out it works fine. I may have to put a GI trigger group in it and see how that goes.

More problems to work through. I think the Gen II upper was meant to work with the AR-15 bolt catch because the LR-308 bolt catch won't clear the upper enough to lock the bolt. I double-checked the hammer pin location and it's right on as close as I can measure, so the hammer/trigger set I got just isn't going to work with this upper.

10.5 w/can, sweet! It seems heavy but, will be a stable setup you do well with I bet.

On the trigger, not advocating you modify new parts without thought but, might could clearance a scootch to roll with it, so long as your not changing the hooks it shouldn't affect function.

Won't clear the bolt? You said upper, I'm not quite with ya on what's going on there. It could be an out of spec catch.

I meant bolt carrier. With the rear action pin out and the upper cracked .080" open at the back, the hammer JUST barely clears the carrier. The hook head on the back of the hammer is bottomed solidly against the trigger body, no way it will ever work. If I ground enough off the nose to clear, the hammer wouldn't contact anything but the bottom edge of the firing pin. Checking the hammer face position vertically with the "height" of the firing pin, it is a perfect match, so all the tolerances stack fine, just the hammer isn't compatible with the BCG for some reason.

Well, that sucks. If ya really want the trigger & it's such a tiny bind, could clearance the bolt itself.

The bolt catch isn't clearing the bolt lugs to pop up & catch it?

The bolt catch is binding on the upper itself. A good bit of Dremel work on the catch will fix it but I think the -15 catch is already clearanced correctly to work with this combo......if it will work with the -10 mags. I got plenty of options on this, no big deal. The hammer/bolt carrier interference IS a big deal, will try -15 stock hammer/trigger when I get home.

So your new, bigger hammer has a hammer problem? Could you fix the new hammer hammer issue with a big hammer?

Ian now needs a new, bigger hammer hammer hammer.

Put an ar-15 bolt release and hammer/trigger in it and all works as it should. Weird stuff these non-standard LR-308s.

That would have worked just fine I believe, but Freebullet's post way back made a lot of sense. Low recoil is a priority.

Also, the bigger AR platform provides a lot more high-power options.

The plot thickens......new lower. Had too many problems with the Warrhogg so now I have a James Madison Tactical lower and trigger, MUCH better!

I still have to ream the trigger pin bushing a little to get the trigger pin all the way through and attach the anti-rotation plates, but other than that she's ready for a scope and some range time.

Looks nice. My friend shot a hog this year with his .30-06, 150 rem Cor-Lokt. Bang, flop, feet
kicking in the air for a few secs. He hunts hogs and ducks in N. Texas somewhere each Jan.

Normal JSP stuff like a Hornady should work great, or a softnose two-alloy cast FP, too.

I think I see your problems there.
did you know some of the controls and holes were cut on the wrong side of the gun?
and also the word tactical got used,, that alone guarantees problems.

If I didn't I will the first time I pull the trigger! Properly located holes and controls are difficult and expensive enough to get on an AR-15, much less an AR-10. I even splurged and put on some Seekins buttons, you know, to make it more tacticool. The Magpul-matching pattern on the lower is supposed to be good for another 50 fps. Now that I went with a black lower I might have to change the stock and grip, even if I eventually do the Duracoat OCP camo finish.

Camo...

I was thinking pink with a likeness of miss piggy, tapering snout on the handguard, with a kinda exploding flaming transition coming out the mouth at the front end. :p how good are you with an airbrush?
This is after all going to be the new piggy exploding hammer.

MP 30 SIL both solid and HP, and I have a brick of 168 SMKs to work on too. The throat will accept the Lee 312-160 bullet powder-coated and sized .310", seated to crimp in the groove, so that's an option too. Mainly I intend to use the SMKs and work on the cast hps at 2400 fps if I can manage that from the 18" barrel without blowing my suppressor off.
