IDEAL 311413

I did some mould trading with S Mac a few days ago.
In the trade, I ended up with this single cavity IDEAL, 311413 and a nice double cav. Lyman 311466.
Many .30 cal. cast bullet shooters don't like the 311413.
I suspect they are trying to shoot it much faster than I do.
I stay below 1,600 fps.
My rifles really like it.
This mould drops a nice round .3125 " dia. cast bullet.
I size to .310" and .311", so that works out nicely for my applications.
This mould is an oldie, but this IDEAL will cast great bullets. ( As most all IDEAL's will........) I would really like to know how old this one is ? ? ?

Glad you like it Ben. Tried to insert smiley face here but not working on my phone today.

Yep! Those look familiar. I have yet to encounter an IDEAL mould that did not produce a beautiful bullet.

That looks like a bullet my H&R 7,62 x 39 would like when sized to .309 and layered with some PC.

Heavy?? I shoot 115's, 125's, and even 168's so far AND they do work wonderfully. At 88gr, they should be great for varmint medicine.:)
BTW Bruce, the Reamer is Goodsteel's now.

I don't remember what the 413 weighs but it's substantially more than 88 grs.

Goodsteel will put the 30 Apache reamer to good use I am sure. I think that cartridge probably does best in a bolt or single-shot rifle anyways. And the 413 is definitely heavier than 88gr ;)

Ben, the 413 will always shoot well if held below
the 1600 mark, preferably between 1450 and
1500.

I have no problems with shooters who are in a quest for that last few fps possible. I am finished with all that ( thank goodness ) and now enjoy shooting my plain base and gas checked cast bullet at much more reasonable and modest velocities.
Yes Paul, you're exactly right.

Sorry about that, I thought I was responding to Ben's post about the 311419. You're correct about the 413; somewhere around 170gr I think.

I hear that a lot. Seems to be due to the pointy nose. I stumbled across this quote from Pdawg Shooter this morning, thought I'd throw it out there: "My 06 load uses a 311414 at 2800fps with 1.5 MOA." That's paper patched without a gas check, so I don't think it's the long, pointed nose that's the issue.

What is interesting ( at least for me ) is I've never tried to push the bullet fast because the " knowledgeable " cast bullet shooters say it can't be done......... ? ?

That's why I question everything. It's not to be ornery, it's to keep from being myopic. I have no doubt that the bullet prefers 1400 fps, but I still wonder why?

I'm one of those gluttons for punishment. I'm hoping that a double PC coat and GCed 311413 sized at .311 will perform well out to 100yards at over 1600fps. The alloy is Brinnel-18 based off the percentages of 25% Roto-Metal Super Hard (30% Antimony) alloy and 75% Magnum Reclaimed Shot

Do you need your bullet that hard? I would think down around BH 12 would work good.
