IDEAL 457483 , I shot some yesterday from my 45/70, deadly accurate with my load.

I'm getting a nice, round .460" with ACWW's.

I'm shooting these out of a Knight K P - 1, , 45/70 with a Green Mountain barrel.

My load that shot so well yesterday was 21.0 grs. of 2400 with the bullet you see above sized to .460" with a very light crimp, primers were Wolf Large Rifle. At 50 yards, it put 5 rounds on top of each other in a ragged hole.

I still have a box of bullets that an older gentleman gave to me many years ago cast from his mold. His had been hollowpointed and I remember his lube was homemade. Don't know what all he used but I do remember Mobil 1 was part of it. They sure shot accurate. He has long since passed and I sort of keep what I have left just to remember him when I look at them. Only met him one time through a friend and I was just learning to cast at the time. I asked that man a thousand questions that day.

Nice that he was helpful to you and you have many good memories of him.

We SHOULD all be about befriending other shooters and casters in this manner.

Ben, tell us more about your gun, I've never seen or heard of that one before?

The 483 was the first 548 bullet that I cast for my #1 45-70. It is in all probability my most accurate bullet as well. My load is 22 gr 2400 with dac fill, bullet cast about 18 bh.

KHornet,

I've shot 21.0 of 2400, think I'll move on up to 22.0 and try your load.

Many thanks,
Ben

I'm waking up this old thread as I have been thinking of the 457483 for my Ruger #3.

I am 'looking' at an old Lyman single cavity that's currently listed. From the photos, it looks great, but I'd sure like to know what size they will be. e-commerce can be challenging, I can't get the seller to answer my question of what size bullet falls from the mold?

I am liking Ben's photo with the Micrometer :) .460 would be awesome. My biggest fear is getting a undersized Lyman. My Ruger #3 probably should have one sized at .458 or a tiny bit larger.

OMG!!!

It’s a new game. Instead of rock/paper/scissors. Now it’s lube/paper/PC!!!

I get shotgun!!!

I have had that mold since the mid-60's. It is an excellent performer in my Ruger #3. I size .458 and seat the bullets out until the breech block will just barely drag on the case head when the action is closed. With 22-24 grains of 2400 it shoots MOA every time. Scope is a Weaver K 3.
