you'll still get errant drops with the MEC.
i tore one of mine apart and built a stand to hold only the top part, just to do powder drops with it, thinking the same thing.
i ended up dropping onto a scale and then trickling up.

the one thing i did find though that a couple tenths one way or the other really didn't make a big difference in how things grouped.
i was dropping 12grs. [aboutish] of steel in my 44 mag. never really bothered with the measuring over and over thing and just dumped straight into the case and they shot a lot better than i thought they would.
i run the same 'measured' amount into some 0-6 cases and they also shot good nuff for rocks and stuff.
i kinda learned a little something about a fairly consistent powder volume being about as important as the actual weight.

i always wondered why we didn't work with powder in a volumetric measurement instead of a weighed amount.
it would sure lead to making it easier to discuss powder volume versus gas volume instead of burn rate and weighed amounts.
