Is there a reason.

Is there a purpose in firing jacketed bullets in a new barrel other than to see if the rifle can group or should you just go right cast.

That isn't an easy question to answer.
If it was a good barrel with a smooth throats I would go right to cast.
I would try cast in a new barrel/gun and seee what they do. If I saw issues I would try jacketed to see we if the gun was the problem.
Jacketed can also be used to smooth a rough throat and clean up a slightly rough bore. It won't solve everything but enough jacketed will remove some rough spots.
Look at how well many well used milsurps do with cast.

In short, it depends.

If it was by JES I would go right to cast. I haven't heard a bad word about his work.

I would ask Ben, I'm pretty sure he has had a few done by JES

If the gun won't chamber cast..... maybe starting there won't work.

Unless it is a hand lapped barrel, a break-in procedure will smooth out the bore a lot
and help minimize roughness which can assist in leading.

I need to go read that again and see if it needs updating.

Usually about halfway up the neck works, depending on how much of a neck impression you need and how long of a lead slug you have to work with. If you need the whole neck impression, I advise heating the case up very hot to completely anneal at least the top half dead-soft, and only fill it to the base of the neck.

Have never "Broken In" a new bbl. I normally fire a few rounds
of jacketed to sight in, before I start w/cast: but not always!
Guess it depends on my mood, and what I have loaded at the
time. As Brad wrote: "It all depends"!

the only reason I would go to jacketed first is so I could have some high pressure fire formed cases.
if I shoot copper I have to clean it out.
