Promo ( Red Dot ) won't do everything perfectly.
However, ( in a pinch ....and those days could be coming ) it can do a lot of things pretty well. 12 ga. light field loads, 38 Special, 44 special, 45 ACP.
yep.
combine it with a couple of other powders, and you can get along just fine pretty much no matter what you have to shoot.
I get a bit antsy if I don't have red-dot and green-dot on hand in umm let's say a minimum amount.
That's about what I paid for an 8lb jug of Promo (a couple years ago) at the LGS. I suspect this price is pretty good for today (today being the possible beginning of next shortage).
last I looked the shelves at the LGS were pretty empty.
a couple of 4lber's which jacks the per lb. up substantially, and some odd 1 lber's.
the funny thing is there was 3 jugs of bulls-eye sitting there and 1 of 700-X.
I'm cool with using either one of them, but they don't seem to be all that popular around here.
I have no experience with Promo. I have read that weight-for-weight it runs very close to Red Dot.
When you say "It must be weighed", is that to say that it does not run through powder measures easily? I have that experience with 800-X and long-grain 4831, and with Bartlett's "#7". I prefer to avoid such issues.
I think the “must be weighed” is a reference to different density compared to Red a Dot. For shotgun presses it means you must weigh the charge to get the right bushing because the “normal” Red Dot bushing will not likely throw the right charge.
For us, where we set measures by wright already, it isn’t a big deal.
Oh, and Promo doesn’t measure great. It isn’t horrible but similar to other flake powders
Promo loads to Red Dot data weight for weight not volume for volume. And Brad all my Promo loads are thrown. I check every 100th round on my Dillon & they are very close. Of course that's just one out of a 100.
