I know it doesn't say that on the calendar.. LOL.
but it is officially winter.

[insert picture of starlings in a tree here]

the Ravens have moved into town, and the Starlings are raiding the crab apple tree.
the Ravens move in and out of town all year but come and stay in the winter.
but as soon as I see the Starlings come and start emptying out the apple tree, it's a sure sign winter is here and it's staying for good.
they have been moving in and out of the tree all morning and have cleaned the old apples off the top third already.

so what's your official winter is here signal?

Came EARLY and hard here - N AL. Actually wore my bomber jacket (the real deal/WWII style sheepskin) in Nov! Unheard of! Usually only get 4-5 days a year out of it. Starting this early, and forecast is a cold one. May get to enjoy it a bit more than usual. Oh yeah, AND we had a snow/sleet dusting in the middle of Nov too! Again, unheard of here...

When the cedar blooms in early December it's officially winter, but my personal gauge has always been the robin migration. Cedar waxwings also migrate right alongside the robins. Usually the first wave of them show up with the second or third cool front, about this time of year, but often later in December or even January. It takes several cool fronts in a row to finally kill off summer and knock the temps down low enough for a few light frosty mornings. I saw the first robins Sunday, attacking the cedar berries around my house. Funny thing about using the robin migration to judge winter is in the past 6-8 years, I only remember seeing them once, and our winters have been unusually warm. Those years they don't come, I can pretty much say we didn't HAVE a winter at all.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
I have never seen so many geese at one time as I did yesterday, wave after wave of V's, as far as I could see for at least ten minutes, headed due south. Pretty good bet it's winter.

When it gets cold it is winter. It has been cold for a few days already. Not bad today but it will be back.

Went downtown to the Civic Center and finally got on the Area Planning Commission site review list for December 3. Also got on the the variance review list for December 20. Once we get past these two reviews we will be able to start putting up our new building. It has taken 8-9 months to get this far. In the spirit of the holidays I will refrain from making any negative comments about the various governmental agencies I've had to deal with.

It's odd, the PEOPLE I've had to deal with have been very nice, but the BUREAUCRACIES have been a real pain in the lower digestive tract.

You know it is winter here if you drive by. There is a giant sucking sound as my woodpile goes up the chimney.

Winter arrived on Nov. 10th, the morning that Arkansas Modern Gun Season opened. Was twenty four degrees. Since then almost every night the low has been below freezing. Had two mornings, with snow covering the ground, last week. Twenty six is the low for this morning. Suppose to have highs, at or near sixty degrees, today and tomorrow. However, it takes all day to hit those temps..............just in time for them to start plummeting again. :sigh:

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Most years of late I can graze into December. We're feeding round bales already! Not good. Winter got here about 3 weeks ago.
