Just how much accuracy is needed ?

Crows are too smart to be easy to shoot. Used to have the lookout posted on a dead pine about 75 yds from
our house in Fla. If I walked out empty handed he would just look at me, maybe caw a couple times. If I came
out with a rifle, he was gone NOW and screaming bloody murder. Even a broomstick held like a gun got him
airborne instantly.
Smart birds with great vision.

As a kid working on a dairy farm, we used to spread manure on the snow in the winter, and go back after crows with hornets and 222's, and sometimes a shotgun, about an hour later. Crows would flock to the field to pick at the manure, and there was an approach to the field where the lookout usually could not see us. Sometimes got a couple of shots. We did not ever decimate the crow population I can assure you.

That's interesting Paul, can't wait to try it.

Bill, you are right on time.'round here if you snooze you lose. It's short range, better have your field "position" ,gun/load in order.

I did miss the last one...well,got a pce of him,but that's all horse shoe..should've could've.

Was using my every day, don't leave home without it cast boolit gun. It's a Stevens 200?...308 with Lyman 311041.Deal is,and I love this scope,it's a Loophole 1-4 shotgun model (we've been inside it,as well as the parent).Got that thick ole reticle.

I was headed to work,308 over the shoulder, getting ready to just about throw it in the truck and dang, there's a crow at 100.Flat out didn't center hit him.

That took way longer to type than the action.

Guess the heat is getting to me,uhh it is not a Stevens 200,the .308 that's been within an arms reach for the last two years,at work and at home is a Marlin X7,doh.

Got two scopes, the aforementioned Leupold 1-4,and a "reworked" minty older 3-9 Redfield. On plain Jane weaver mounts/bases.The Redfield is sighted in for 150g j words. The loophole stays on 99% of the time.

To quote a old Hunter and great target shooter Major Ned Roberts, he once said" 4" at 20 rods, which is about 4 inches@110yards", Ned was the odd man @the first Creedmore match ,the ninth man on the team,U.S. team won that match by 1point.

There is three types of accuracy, target, hunting & defensive. I have practiced all three to a great extent and they all have the same thing in common, real-world scenario practice. You can not become proficient at any of these with just shooting from a bench, even target shooting as you need to do it within time limits with different climates. Time & climate along with position comes into play with hunting & defensive practice also.

Well said David.
Might be why I do most of my shooting offhand? I dont hunt with a bench.

Try pie plate, minute of Deer ,and coffee cup. If you can hit what your aiming at. all that counts",aim small miss small" if you can post groups at 100 yards ,that's nice , but unless your point of aim is the same as your point of impact your not going to hit what your shooting at???

I think anything under 2 MOA is usable. That gives you a 6" kill zone at 300 yards. With jacketed I won't settle for less then 1 MOA, usually shoot for .5 moa.

Agree with David. I very seldom go over 100 yds for deer, and 3MOA will normally do
the job. When I am pdog shooting out to 500 yd ranges, I want the smallest group I can
shoot to be 3" high at 100, and work around that. Am usually satisfied with Min of Pdog
what ever the range.

I guess it "depends"?

Got a call this morning from a multi national,ex pro, archery icon.A set of limbs will set you back what a nice rifle costs? He needs a pr.

He practices"about" 3 hrs a day, every day.How much accuracy do you think he needs?I've sat with him at a cpl of the "largest" manufacturers on the planet.

At some point, you are going to be faced with some decisions. How far are you willing to go?Sort of like getting a custom mould?Match grade brrl? What do you really know about....and are willing to learn about bedding?

How important is"reaching" a goal?IMO,it's very much an individual decision.

Greetings
I am privileged to hunt river bottoms on the North Fork River when up north there. Last white tail I shot with a long barrel was with a caliber 58 Zouave replica close enough to set the fur on fire. Range was right at 2 feet. One of the easiest track downs I ever had...burned hair smells a good while. And a .57 40-1 RB really makes a big leaker.

Have used recurves since except for a few revolvers off and on. Range averages under 10 yards. Longest was 22 yards. Most are at 5-7 yards. A good rub down with apples before leaving the car refreshing the boots ever 30 minutes really gets a deer's appetite working.
Only long barrel I still want to pop a corn cruncher with is a Hall model 1819 flinter I call Ol' Vesuvious. Well there is a 50 Alaskan that I hope to bash a few piggies with.

Now crows with a flinter is a great way to spend a morning. Ground hogs also. a pound of 3F, a bag of balls and #5 shot and it is no problem to get "lost in the bushes" for the day. Only issue is them little blood suckers that get awful hungry through July and August.

Good stuff Missionary!!I was right there with ya.

2 feet is,up close and personal...

My best is 7 yds.Was guiding a red plaid woolrich wearing, longbow hunter. And that was plenty close.Good stuff, and he was a real good shooter.

I shot a black bear that attacked me at less than a foot. Head shot, Marlin .35. Doesn't get much closer than that. Dad always said to keep my thumb on the hammer... if I had not done so the outcome would have been different.

IIRC you did your competitive shooting standing on your hind legs as well.
The hardest part was offhand. It was said that matches were won offhand at 200 and lost prone at 600. Pretty darn true.

If it can keep all shots on the bottom of a old school metal coffee can I will hunt with it out to the farthest distance I can reliably do so.
