Knife handle- work in progress

Lol. Thanks man. The spacer material is vulcanized paper. Really adds another dimension to the look. Antler, black walnut, and blood wood.

I am sure you know this. For a stronger bond use epoxy that has the longest work time. And you can thin the epoxy with acetone. Up tp 10%. Then put that on the material to soak in. Then before it cooks off assemble the parts with just the regular epoxy. Some woods take the epoxy very well while other woods that have lots of oil in them do not. Then you drill a bunch of small holes to make a mechanical lock.

I built many boats over the years with stitch and glue methods. I always had lots of epoxy on hand. One thing I did a few times for handles was to make a simulated bone. I took the epoxy and mixed fumed-silica into a heavy paste. It will be extremely hard but turns out like a piece of sanded bone when done.

Also forgot to add this. Do not clamp the pieces too tight. Just enough to hold them from moving. You can push all the epoxy out and will have a dry joint.

I am not sure if these tips will help or not. I don't know how much you have worked with this stuff before.

If you are going to do this a lot get some larger quantities from USComposites or Raka. USComp is going to be the cheaper. I have had really good luck with their stuff. You could thin it out and make your own Micarta. I tried it once and was not the best. You almost need a vacuum chamber to get all the air out.

Nice stuff Walter. You have a great deal more patience than I do..

I have a friend in Arizona who does a fair amount of work with rocks, polishing and shaping. A few trips back he gifted me with a knife he made for display, the blade is made of jade and a bone handle. I'll dig it out and get a picture posted. You might like his work.

I’d love to see it!

I need to make a cedar stand for it, as it needs to be out on display rather than in my safe. Seeing your work reminded me dig it out.
