Loading the Safariland Speedloader

I ordered a couple of the Pachmayr J-frame loaders for my Model 642. Not to say I have a BUNCH of HKS loaders, but I do--they almost fill a 3# coffee can in the garage. None for 5-shot 38 J-frames, though. They are a dollar more than the HKS models, no big deal. I have grown fond of the 642, the noisy little monster. Lack of refills on board and ready became a concern, though. Spare mag or spare loader is a MUST. Getting shot or shot at prompts such outlooks.

Well, the Pachmayr speed-loaders arrived yesterday. The good news? Amazon had them to my doorstep in about 36 hours.

Now for the rest of the story. They present as a well-made, sturdy tool with smooth and easy detent stops. They work very much like the HKS loaders, with a more stalwart "star wheel" that pivots to retain/release cartridges. In fact, it is so stalwart that IT DOES NOT ALLOW MY CARRY LOADS TO BE SNAPPED INTO OR RELEASED FROM THE LOADERS except with forceful twisting. THAT WILL NOT DO--AT ALL. In fairness, this is only one make of OEM carry ammo (Rem 125 JHP +P), and I will mess around with other brass makes today to see if those work better--but for now these are a NO-GO for carry usage. HKS loaders and Speed Strips are known and proven items. Summed up--the jury is still out.

I'm not going to throw in the towel on these things until I get a chance to play with them some more. I meant to do that today, but I have ALL KINDS OF TREASURES in the boxes of stuff from that estate sale, and I spent the day rassling with that. Short summation--I have more than a life-time's supply of 22 centerfire J-words and 44 caliber cast Lyman Devastator bullets (.431 sizing, thankfully).

I just discovered a new speed loader for concealed use and like it a lot. It is the speed strip loader that will load 5 at a time, or only two if you are topping off. Simply insert it and peel it off the cartridges.
It is called the Zeta6. They had a model for the J-frame and most other 5 shot revolvers except for the Ruger LCR. I just took possession of a pair of brand new ones for the LCR. They work well. Very compact easy to use even with wadcutters and not prohibitively expensive. They are a bit of a pain to load the loader, very similar to Bianchi speed strip. On the other hand the reload is much faster, on a par with the HKS at about half the price.
Yes I tried the J-frame model first and like the rest they don't work. The LCR has the cases closer together....enough to be a problem. I have the snubby LCR grips on my LCRx-3 and it works perfect.
Anyway $10-13 plus $3 for shipping per pair.

More info, Rick. Neither Amazon or Midway sell them.

BTW, my LCR (357) works with the J-frame H&K............could be the longer 357 cartridge has more wiggle room. I don't use wadcutters, only SWC's.

:headscratch: I would think a 5 shot would be named Zeta5.

When I checked Ebay they were not offering the Ruger models, I went to the source and they were the same price. If you are getting them for the LCR get the "R" model, you will be much happier. They also have an interesting take on the speed strips, offering a number of different versions and spacings.

Those Zeta loaders look right interesting.

Too freakin' hot to mess with the Pachmayr reloaders yet, I'll get aroundtuit eventually. In the meantime a couple HKS loaders just landed, and they run like they are supposed to. Yeah, they "print". You say that like it's some bad thing.

Man, this thread brought back some memories. Funny too that I was just putting on 2 sets of new VZ Grips on my 686 4" and my K38. I haven't shot a DA revolver in many years with the exception of my Model 60 357 as I was zeroing a new front sight blade.

I have a gallon bag of Comp II's and 6 Comp III's for L frames and probably a dozen Comp II's for K Frames. I carried a 15 in the AF then a 681 for about 9 years afterwards elsewhere. I've used the Safariland speedloaders for PPC competition too. Extremely fast and easy to use.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Received my Zeta-6-R speed loaders from ebay, the ones designed only for the LCR. They say they wont fit other guns/models. Well the first thing I did was take the 642 out of my pocket and unload it. Installed the five rounds in the loader and tried it in the Smith.

Low and behold it worked..................contrary to the enclosed literature. Not only that, I load my 642 with a mix of three different factory loads. Couple of Critical Defense, couple of Speer Golddots and a Remington Golden Sabre. All of mixed lengths. The Remington is by far the longest.

Here is the 357 LCR using the HKS #36 J-frame speed loader.

So I see no reason why, the Zeta6 (standard) won't fit in a LCR.
