Looking at mills

I get my text strips free, it's the insulin that costs a bunch. had to change from the pens to bottles and syringes because of the cost.

My insurance covers both the pens and the strips, a $50 co-pay for each for 3 months supply. Mighty fine thing cause if insurance didn't cover it I would be shopping for a plot someplace. The pens cost the insurance $2,500 every 3 months.

That list pretty well matches what I expected.
Now I need to look at items and get an idea of total cost so it can all be factored in. Gotta keep the financial backer in the loop, otherwise she gets crabby.

Some of the machinist forums have some good deals.Used to hang on practical machinist, got a few things there..... got a cpl lathes,at least one mill,oh yeah got a killer deal in a Bridgeport 12" rotory table, that we still have. And made some good friends, one guy..."Sidecar",his parents bought the remnants of Norton, grinding devision. He's the one that gave me an original,1947 with period correct greasy finger prints, factory manual for our surface grinder.... loved that ole guy.

There's a heck of a deal on a badarse 13x36? 3500lb lathe on old woodworking equipment site.Guy gets it for 1500$ then dinking around with it,engages the half nuts while sumthin else was engaged and busts a cpl teeth off a spur gear or ? Fesses up and now wants 400 OBO..... the effed up part is it's 3 hours from here.Could have it sorted in half a day..... but thems days are over.

A lot of what folks are looking at as mill "tooling"...... ain't. Meaning, most of it is general metrology gear that you should have "irregardless" of a mill or not.Drills,parallels,123 blocks, surface gages,DI's,etc are all just basic gettinRdone gotta haves.

Have the same rotary table. Was originally part of the tooling package that was bought with the mill. Also have the right angle fixture to use the rotary table in the horizon orientation.

Too lazy to take a pic so the following description.....

Built a heavy duty cabinet with solid steel castors. The RT sits on top.To load it onto the mill...... the only drawer on the cab comes out. Then you set the mill table at the "just so" height, to where it fits into the now empty drawer slot. Carefully slide RT onto mill table. It's faster than #1 getting help,#2,hooking up chain falls.

The base of this cab holds a twin tank compressor,to supply air/hyd vises. And other once in awhile air chores...... didn't want to run air, hard lines from big compressor. I know it's considered very bad juju to speak of air nozzles in a machine shop( newbs blowing chips "into" machines),nothing is faster for blowing off tooling and parts..... just saying,I like having it's own air supply.

Has Brad received a delivery date yet? Has Brad picked up any tooling other than the vise yet? Curious minds gotta know.

Has Smokey got a quote on cost of moving his shop yet?

No one wants to do the whole job. Long distance mover says I have to find a machinery mover to put the machinery on their truck and I have to have a machinery mover take it off their truck at the other end.

Did ya get a quote on moving the house yet? That ain't cheep either.

Can't remember off the top of my head what it was. A fixed fee plus poundage. The better half has the email on her computer.

EDIT: Have a feeling the whole thing is going to be pushing $20K.

that's also about the price of a Hernia operation... I wonder if that's a coincidence?

20 grand is the price of freedom huh? Decisions Decisions Decisions.

Cost me far less than that but I didn't have a machine shop and I brought very little furniture and no appliances with me. With the cost of moving all that I bought new when I got here. I paid a guy $1,000 to tow the shop trailer and rented a uhaul truck and car trailer. Loaded up the truck with everything, put the car on the trailer drove here myself.

No delivery date yet. Expect a call any day.
I have some other tooling. No cutting tools yet. I have some 1/8” parallels, some 123 blocks, an edge finder, a fly cutter, some v blocks, and the 5C collet block set.

Right now I have around 700 bucks in tooling for a mill I don’t yet have?

Smokey, it ain’t cheap to move heavy stuff. I can’t even imagine moving again.

Money was secondary to me, I would have walked if needed to get out of that state.

We used Omega Morgan to move all of our heavy machines from our old shop to our new building that is over 335,000 SQ FT.
I have no idea how much these guys charge, but I can tell you they have the equipment to do the job right and are VERY professional.
