looking for a P14 barrel

Anyone with a P14 Enfield rifle barrel sitting on a shelf somewhere? Looking to mate one up with an Winchester P14 receiver, stock and PH5B sight I have on my shelf. I was going to modify a M1917 barrel but its in 300 Win Mag and not feeling the love to use that cartridge on this setup.

I'd even consider buying a Drill Purpose take-off barrel if that is available.

100s of P-14 were converted to Magnum cartridges as the bolt face fits the rim.

Howe's Gunsmithing has many pics of them. I've seen at least 2 one 300 H&H the other 375 H&H.

You have a phone number or a link to this shop? "Howe's gunsmithing" in Yahoo search just refers back to the books by Walter or James Howe.

The Howe gunsmithing books that you found on your search.

Professional Gunsmith; a Textbook on the Repair and Alteration of Firearms-With Detailed Notes and Suggestions Relative to the Equipment and Operation of a Commercial Gunshop Hardcover – January 1, 1946

Bruce,

I believe the shops have been closed for a while, maybe decades. I doubt they have any inventory available.

Howes been dead for decades. I don't believe Bruce is looking for to build a magnum anything especially since he's looking for a '14 barrel and not a '17 barrel.

Yes. He has a 300 winmag barrel. That will fit the P-14 boltface. It might need some tuning to feed but can be done. Back in the day P-14s were redone in 3.6" magnums that required more work that the 3.34" 300 Win Mag would require. The commercial Remington Model 30 early production was made using left over parts from the WW I P14/17 contracts.

By the time he gets done milling off the sight ears, straightening the floor plate, D&T ing for a scope, putting on a better looking bolt handle, fixing the feeding and stocking it, he could find any number of modern rifles for less money.

Sporterizing military rifles no longer makes financial sense as well as destroying rare collectible rifles.

Criterion is out of stock but they catalog a nice short-chambered one: https://criterionbarrels.com/products/p14-enfield/p14-enfield-barrels/?v=7516fd43adaa

Perhaps you should read Bruces post again. Perhaps several times. He's not looking to do what you outline. Bruce shoots military matches among other things. I'm very aware of everything that has been done with Enfields, Springfields ,Mausers, Arisakas, Krags, etc, over the past 130 plus years, as are many of the other men here. Having known Bruce for something pushing 20 years now, I'm sure if he wanted a factory rifle, he would get one. If he wanted to sporterize one, he'd do that too. Perhaps you should let Bruce decide the course he wishes to pursue.

Thanks everyone for the discussion on this thread. I own the Howe gunsmithing books already. I was hoping I had a lead on a new gunshop owned be a person named Howe.
My goal is to get this rifle action back to its military configuration as much as I can. The only thing not military that I'll add to the rifle will be a Parker Hale 5b adjustable rear sight so it would have the appearance of a NRA Match rifle that would have been shot at Bisley in the 1930s.
If I have to go the route of a custom rifle barrel, I'll do that but that is of last recourse.
The 300 WinMag barrel that I have is a modified 1917 barrel that had the action threads recut for the P14 action. It would work if I only wanted a sporter rifle but then I'd be limited to 3 rounds in the magazine and its sporter barrel is too short to fit a full enfield stock.
If I can find a P14 Drill Purpose barrel, I plan to make a barrel sleeve out of it and put another barrel onto the action that way and basically headspace it as a Savage 110 with a barrel locknut. To keep the military appearance with this backup method, I'll have to make room inside the stock and the upper handguard for the locknut but it can be done as long as I measure twice and cut once.
I've got plenty of time to finish this project but with my name on Criterion's back order list for almost 2 years now, I'm not expecting them to do another run of barrels anytime soon.
