JWFilips I use this as my front rest band I do rest the front of the rifle pretty far down the barrel...I also use a thick flannel cloth between the front bag and the rifle stock. Next month I will be testing out the cast loads using the 245496 cast bullets and Unique powder.

Excellent....I have some targets that show groups in the 1.5 ~ 2" range...with quite a few of the shots in what I thought were close groupings. Yours puts mine to shame. And I thought I had done so well. However in my shooting 7mm-08 & .308 Win (the .243 Win's Big Brothers) groups were noticeably closer.

I had been using the RCBS 95 SP-GC.....has anyone else used this bullet in their .243 Win and what results have shooting it?

Wally--

The RCBS bullet did most of the heavy lifting at NCBS that I spoke of in my prior posts.

I REALLY need to stop posting about the great cast bullet work the 243 can do. I need another rat rifle like the North Slope needs ice chips. The 243 does fine work with J-words as well. All of the 308 Winchester offspring seem to be preter-naturally accurate.

Wally,
Awhile back I was gifted a bunch of the RCBS 95 Gr 243 cast bullets gas checked & lubed but they were made of "pure Linotype" I never shoot bullets this hard so I was going to to remelt them with some Pure and Wheel Weights
But I figured since they were ready to shoot I would try them first & they shot fine ( Ricocheted like a bugger however)
I never did remelt them I just shot them They were pretty accurate!
I have also used some of the ones I got from the Bullshop These were just wheel weight alloy They too were very accurate. Please note that these Targets were shot at 50 yards Ten shot groups I used these to blow out FL sized new cases

JWFilips Fantastic shooting/groupings. I am so very impressed. I cannot wait to get out on my range again once winter releases his icy grip. I have never had results shooting the RCBS bullet in my Rem 700, but I now have a new Savage Axis to try. Your results have inspired/motivated me to reach for the MOA star! Last year I broke in a new Savage Axis 7mm-08 and did extremely well with it with cast bullet loads. I hope top do the same with the .243 this year. One shooter mentioned that my technique may be the issue. I shoot off the top of the roof of my Chevy Impala using a thick piece of carpeting with a rear bag and a Hoppes adjustable front rest. I've been told if I used a solid bench rest my groupings would be 2 or 3 times "tighter".

Actually I use the same style rest ( until 2 weeks ago My wife bought me a Caldwell Rock BR) but it is the Lyman and My rear bag is similar it is a caldwell You really need to shoot off a table to enjoy your hobby more You groups will be tighter
I went thru my 243 target file ( I save every target I shoot good or bad) It tells me a lot when I refer back to the data.
I knew I had some good shot groups with Bullshop's RCBS 95 Gr cast bullets I bought from him
This is one of the better if not best 10 shot groups I shot at 100 yards
Also They were copper gas checked Lubed with Ben's Red and a BLL overcoat
( Seems I shot a lot of 100 yard targets with the 243! with speedy loads back then ....now I only shoot 50 yds most times)

My range is set up where the targets are in a fixed area...I must move my shooting "stand" to give me the appropriate range. I have no way of moving a heavy bench back & forth nor can I leave the bench out indefinitely as I shoot along a farm field access path. So I must use my Impalas roof and stand on stool. That's another very fine group.... have you ever shoot at targets at 200 yards with that load?

15 years ago I was shooting the .243 Rem 700 at 250 yards at a 3" steel plate using 11.0 Unique and the 95 RCBS-GC bullet...my "criteria" was to be able to hit it most of the time. I'd do slow strings of 5 shots and was routinely hitting it 3/5 and 4/5 most of the time. This was for fun not for a CBA trials. My 700 can no longer do this for me because I have shot the rifle often over the years and it is my belief that the throat has eroded to such an extent that it is affecting its' accuracy....too many hot loaded jacketed bullets (about 2,000 or so). So I bought a new Savage Axis .243 to try out and see what I can do with it. Then I found a used 245496 mold that I will use to make bullets that I feel will give me excellent results. Perhaps by loading long they will also give me good results with the Rem 700. BTW I was considering rebarreling the 700....BUT I found it's cheaper to buy a new Savage and have two guns for about 1/2 what it would cost to rebarrel the 700.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Wally, does your Impala by any chance have a receiver hitch? I've seen several guys that made a portable bench that was based partially off the recvr hitch and then 2 legs off the other side with either a built in stool or a glorified 5 gallon bucket to sit on. Might be worth looking into. I don't really know what an Impala looks like anymore, unless yours' is maybe a '68 or so?

Wally,
My Ruger 77V was really hot rodded back in the 1980's! I was always searching for that Magical 4000 fps!
Hit it a few times with Serra 60 gr. bullets.
My throat was burned out by 1990 The gun was shelved!
It wasn't shot again until 2015 ! That is when two guys on another forum convinced me to shoot cast bullets in it!
It was my last modern rife that I tried cast bullets in. Sure I polished up the throat real well and I shoot .246" - .247" cast bullets out of it now. The targets I posted here are from that rifle

Yikes...that gives me even more impetus to try harder with the Rem 700...thank you for the encouragement!

If your cast bullet fit your burnt throat they will shoot well! It may not be a .243 Win anymore but who cares
