Lyman 429215 Gas Check

I picked up a single cavity Lyman 429215 mould ( Ray Thompson's Design ) for my Grandson, Trevor's Handi , 44 Magnum , single shot rifle. The mould cast very nice bullets. I'm fortunate that the mould doesn't throw " sub - size " bullets. These drop at .4335 " The Handi rifle in .44 Mag. with a 1-38 Twist barrel doesn't like long heavy bullets. The Handi - Rifle does like shorter , lighter bullets in the 200 gr. - 225 gr. weight range and shoots them into VERY tight groups . I thought this one might have some application in my slow twist Handi. These size out to .4316" , lubed with Carnuba Blue and then rolled in BLL.

Anyone want to offer a load suggestion for the .44 Mag. Handi Rifle with this particular bullet ? I'm thinking about 11.5 - 12.0 grs. of Unique.

My old favorite "messin' around" load for that bullet in the Super Blackhawks and (Old) Bisley Vaquero was 10 grains of Unique for about 1100 fps from 5.5" to 7.5" barrels. Never shot it out of my Marlin 94 (long gone) but it was a very serviceable load for the revolvers. Probably didn't need a gas check for this load but they were a penny a piece then, and I didn't have to make them either, so I stuck them on anyway.

That bullet was very accurate ahead of max charges of WC820 as well, but the Unique load was great for general purpose.

Some don't care for the Ray Thompson's Designs.
I've always found them to be very serviceable.

Now with the escalating cost of gas checks, I'm beginning to
to reconsider things.........Maybe a lot of my shooting
can be done without a g/c bullet in .44 cal. revolver and rifle.

I've loaded this one over 9.0 grains of Unique in 44 mag cases with excellent results.

Dad introduced this to me in single-cavity with his 5-screw Mod 29 in 1984. That way I could assemble low-pressure loads in the Magnum and learn to shoot it. Reading my loading notes, I found I was assembling rounds with the same powder data as the .45 Colt for most bullets. What worked with 250 grains in the Colt worked at 215 grains with the 429215, and just as comfortable to shoot. Accurate little bullet, too. Hope it goes well for you.

10 gr with a 250 Keith is a pretty snappy load, making 1100 in a 6" revolver. I bet with
the Handi rifle you will see 17-1800 fps with the 11-12 range you were mentioning, perhaps
even reaching 1900 fps, with the lighter bullet. I'm guessing that the 10 gr load would make
it up to about 1400-1500 range with the long barrel and no cyl gap, plus lighter bullet.

If there is deer that needs to be in Trevor's parent's freezer somewhere out there, that would sure do
the job.

I like them. I even like the looks of them. They don't seem to get the attention the Keith-blessed derivations do, but they've always worked well for me - have been very accurate.

Since '09, when I got my first NM Flat Top Blackhawk in 44 Special (not my first 44 Special), I ditched the 44 Mag completely and don't need/use GCs at all any more. If I had a 44 Mag rifle, I'd be using them but I'd also be making them. I saw the price of them in a new Natchez catalog the other day.o_O

My 429215 is a SC also, but this thread has me thinking it wouldn't be a bad one to have as a 4C with 2xPB, 1X GC and 1xHP/GC. It would cover a lot of bases.

For the past couple years, I've been shooting as many 200 to 210 grain RFNs in my 44 Specials (revolvers) as 429421s and my current 44s seem to like them. Since my 429215 resides at a friend's house, I forget about that bullet. Now, I want a coffee can or two of them sitting under my bench.

Speaking of the 250 grain SWC over 10 gr. Unique, that was, for some reason my wife's favorite in the OM SBH. Just enough to know you've got a serious revolver in your hands without having to call it quits before it starts to hurt.

I also have a single hp'ed version, works well in my 444.

I will have to check, don't remember off hand.

Don't go to any trouble. I was just curious. I think it'd be a great bullet for any of the 44s regardless of the slight difference in weight. I've always tended toward the heavier 44s until the last few years and don't know how the RFNs I'm shooting will do at a distance. The 429215 shot well at 60 to 75 yards out of revolvers for me.

Guess I goofed, mine is the 429244, which if I'm not mistaken is also a Thompson design.IMG_20190514_132000177-2624x1476.jpg

Yes, 215 and 244 are Thompson's designs. Light and heavy, pretty much the same bullet with the
changes to make the different weight. Interesting that it is still 250 with the HP.

Trevor shot the Lyman 429215 in his .44 Mag., Handi Rifle today.
10.0 grs. of Unique, Rem 2 1/2 primers.
Bullets sized .4315"
40 yards , 7 rounds.
( He pulled one pretty good ! )
Still not bad for a 10 yr. old.

Trevor is ready to make venison this Fall, if he is so inclined. That 10.0 x Unique is likely in the 1250 FPS ballpark, which is right where the 44/40 WCF carbines of the black powder era performed--perhaps a bit better. The shot placement.....well, that target speaks for itself--he can make the humane, harvesting shot.
