magnetic base LED work/welding light

I have had this flexible arm LED work/welding light for a while now, but I have a love/hate relationship with the permanent magnet - stays in place, but a lot of work/effort to reposition. I have seen a youtube video about making your own magnetic power drill that used security lock magnets, so I bought two, which operate at 12v DC, same as the LED light that I am using.

The idea was to make something with two push button switches, one to turn the LED light ON (which I didn't have - it was either always ON or OFF) and a second button just for the magnet. I got the parts a couple of months ago, but until this "long" weekend it was just in my head. Today I finished it. This was the mockup:

I initially wanted to use like a plastic project box, but I felt those were too expensive, and since I had some scrap mild steel I made my own:

Two boxes - one for each switch:

I drilled both sides of the box (top for the switch size - bottom larger, so that I can access wires), and welded two small side plates (one which will have the strain relief). You can see here on the right one of the 12v security locks:

Nothing pretty, but man, it came out much stronger than I expected. Even at a full 90deg extended, only one of the two magnets is enough to hold in place:

And even diagonally, not making full contact, the lamp still holds in place:

Yup, those auto dimming welding masks are $$. Messes up the good part when you drag to strike the arc.

High-frequency arc start on the TiG machines is fantastic. Auto-darkening helmets don't miss a beat.

That iron fishtail clamp guide is really nice, better than most of the contraptions made for the purpose.

ha I still close my eyes.
if you get an auto darkening helmet make sure it has the little solar panel to keep things charged up and hang it by a window.
the one I have is like 20 sumthin years old and it keeps clicking along like a champ even if I do have to turn it on with an ink pen.
