Making a road trip

Cutie is a nice-looking pup, Rick. I agree with Charles' assessment of Labs, they are wonderful dogs--especially with kids and grandkids.

My favorite Lab Retriever story occurred when I was 15 years old, hunting with my life-long friend Mike in Moreno Valley. Before it became Thug Central in the 1980s, it was quite rural--March AFB and the Riverside Int'l Raceway were its only "developments", otherwise it was mostly grain fields. Doves, quail, and pheasants were pretty thick throughout the area.

Mike, his black Lab Duchess, and I were working a cut barley field in the east end of the Valley one fine Saturday morning. Duchess was doing her job wonderfully, jumping single pheasants every 5-10 minutes most of the morning. Neither Mike nor I could hold our end up worth a darn--we missed unfailingly, all morning long. Duchess would start after the flying bird expecting it to drop after the shots, and........they kept flying. After several such sequences, Duchess stopped about 20 yards ahead of us--sat down--watched the bird fly out of view--and turned toward us and gave us a withering look.

Properly shamed, we continued hunting for a few minutes and approached a tall brushpile in a corner of the grain field. You never knew what would flush from these piles--quail or pheasants, and rattlesnakes loved those piles. Mike and I split up, him circling right and me circling left. Duchess slow-walked up to the brush pile, intent on something inside the pile. She moved like a cat, very slowly, then LEAPED into the pile. She emerged a few seconds later with a male pheasant in her mouth, shook it to dispatch it, then walked over to Mike and dropped it at Mike's feet. We got SERVED.

Five was a lab.
if we were duck hunting and I missed 2 times in a row she would get up and go back to the truck, or if dad was there she would go down and sit with him and pretend I didn't exist until i actually hit something.

and dear god you better not shoot a coot.
she would swim out to it grab it by the tip of the wing and fling it further out in the lake before swimming back to shore.
pretty sure she learned that one from Sasha, the big red golden retriever we had for a few years before getting Five.

Cutie won't be a hunting dog since I no longer hunt. Quit bird hunting about the mid 60's cause I just wasn't fond of eating the birds so I quit shooting them. Cutie it seems has already chosen a career path and at only 16 weeks old, seems she believes life is good laying on her back on my lap getting tummy rubs.

heh they are hunting dogs or they ain't.
just cause you don't take them doesn't change that.

Yeah, my Walker Coon Hound was a hunting dog too. Afraid of guns but hey ya can't have everything.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
She looks to have a nice head. I've had good luck with the more traditional Labs but not so much with the narrower skulled, pointy nosed ones that seem to have become more common out there. Nice looking pup!

Oops, did not realize there was a second page.. I she she is officially dubbed Cutie.. Perfect name.. Cute pup. Wishing you many years of joy with her.

We got our Booda when he was 12 weeks old. He's going to be 16 in August. Nicest dog I've ever owned. Head strong as Hell, but gotta respect a nice dog that knows what he wants. Went deaf a few years ago and his eyesight is going. Can't negotiate stairs in the dark anymore. Still full of life like a pup, though.

Here is is a few years ago, with his buddy Watson, an Aussie that lives across the street. Watson is another wonderful creature. Booda is a ham so had to show off when I started to take their pic.

covid vaccination and boosters What? For a dog? Exactly one case of transferal and that was a laboratory experiment! Is a cute Lab. FIL only would have Labs, great family dogs. As a kid we would sit on Ol Joe and he didn't care.

Kinda my thoughts as well. Never heard of a critter getting covid. I'm thinking the vet sold the kennel owner a bill of goods. In defense of the kennel owner, she skimps on nothing, anything those dogs need they get.
