making imperial sizing die wax results

started a new heading so that no one would miss it. the formula that i used is 12 oz. of castrol stick wax and 3 oz. lanolin. after mixing under heat and pouring in containers , i let it cool. not yet what i was looking for. its a little too stiff to duplicate the real stuff. i know that it will work; but harder to wipe off. so, within a couple of days, i'm going to re-melt and add some johnsons paste wax. i'll keep you informed. oh, if you are going to try to make this stuff; don't pour it into containers yet. put a few drops on newspaper or something. it will cool pretty quick and you can feel it to see if it has the smoothness you want. then unlike me you won't have to scrape it out of 5 containers.

just finished revising the formula for imperial sizing die wax. the formula that i wrote down several years ago sucks! its very stiff and hard to wipe off. here's what i finished with for a formula
13 oz. castrol stick wax
3 oz. johnsons paste wax
3 oz. lanolin
1+ oz mineral oil
the original formula that i wrote down called for 15 oz. (the size of a tube) of castrol stick wax and 2 oz. of lanolin. you see that i modified that formula to make it eaiser to wipe off. i think that you could add more paste wax and mineral oil. your choice. i FL sized six 303 british that came out of a full military and everything was fine. remember, if you use this, use very little per case

Castrol stick wax.....and where might one find such an item. I have seen Castrol motor oil, and Gulf wax (parafin) but never
the Castrol stick wax. Is it parafin like Gulf wax?

OK, found it on line.... 15 oz for $20 for lubing saws and such. I have never seen it before.

Can't remember where I found the recipe but, 50/50 anhydrous lanolin to petroleum jelly, mixed under a low heat then left to cool, is what I use. Back to back against Imperial, it's better, no kidding. And any other case lube is not even in the same ball park. It does kinda smell though.

Chris, you just described Alberto V05 hair dressing in the squeeze tube. These days it probably only has 5% lanolin but that can be boosted to suit. I finally ran through my liquid case lube concoction (lanolin, sulfur ester oil, refined lard oil, cetyl ester, and castor oil) and went back to the VO5 boosted with lanolin. Good stuff.

man.
I'm still working on the first Jar of lanolin castor oil and neets foot oil I made from a Jar of Lanolin I got from the wife's uncle's dads reloading stuff. [from like 1930]
I'm surprised that jar doesn't say batch number one on it somewhere.
I have a feeling he started using it after reading townsend whelen's lube recommendation of everyday anhydrous Lanolin.

Uuuuugh! I can't imagine putting that stuff in my hair. Probably have to wash it out with gasoline! I suppose that is the definition of the term "greasy kids stuff"?

I have been using Friebings Mink oil paste that you can buy at your local tack store.
If you can feel it on your fingers you are using too much.
For case forming I use a little more (you can feel it on the case)
and have not crinkled a case since.

Thanks for the info, a little Imperial die wax goes so far that I have a lifetime supply with just two tins. The first one I purchased in the late 70s and used it a lot to make a lot of .270 cases out of surplus ‘06 brass. I misplaced that tin several years ago and bought a second tin only to find the old tin, right where I left it. I used the old tin this week to make 50 .25/35 cases out of some new .30/30 cases. Of course I’m sure I’ll find the new tin at some point...............
