Making slugs

I didn't take pictures and kind of regret that. What I decided I need to do was slug all of my firearms. I thought about the best/easiest way would be to cast them in pure lead. I took a drill guide and found bits in my collection and rounded them up. I then found a good piece of oak hardwood from an old pallet. I went to the drill press and made the holes. I used a small ladle and cast up all the slugs. They would not release. I expected that so I put the block in the freezer for about an hour. They would still not release. On several, I cast flush but on some of them, there was enough lead on top to grasp with pliers. On those I was able to wiggle them free. The others needed a sharp chisel to expose enough to grip with the pliers and wiggle them out. I now have a slug for every bore I own and with get to slugging. The twist bit puts a nice cone on the tip.

I then decided to search on bore slugging and came across an article by Mike Venturino where he says he uses round balls way over sized and just mashes them in with a dead soft hammer. Not a bad idea but I like my idea too. I was wondering if I needed lube or oil or nothing.

My next quest will be to measure the cylinders in my revolvers and at the moment, I haven't figured that out. Cerrosafe? Some other way?

Minus pin gauges. Get a .250-.500 set or just a few to measure the calibers you need. Wouldn’t be without mine now that I own them.

CDCO is cheap as I could find. After shipping looks like 125 bucks.
If you are looking at a revolver take the sizes needed and measure throats before buying. Kinda hard to make the throats smaller....
I use mine a ton when making bullet size dies.

when I do the slugs I use 2 boards.
I drill through the first one and screw the second one on the bottom.
to retrieve the slugs I unscrew the bottom board and punch the slugs out.

it didn't take me long to figure that out when I needed some 1" diameter slugs for a cannon I made years back.

RB through an appropriate sizer(s) has worked for me most recently .
Cast dead soft they go pretty easy . 30 cal and up is easier than under to get in hand .
