Marlin 336 30-30

Bought this gun new in the 1970's and haven't even shot a full box of ammo through her. My interest is now for a larger caliber such as a 375 or 405 JES. Anybody have experience with either? One major drawback to converting the 30-30 is my shoulder since reconstruction and its inability to tolerate much "kick". I'm able to tolerate my 6.5CM RPR because of the weight and pad. So, should I be looking at either of these conversions, or just sell the 336?

Well for starters put a Decelertor pad on it. Those two calibers carry 75 to 100 grains more weight, possibly more recoil for that alone.
What's your intended use going to be?

I don't understand why you want a .405 if you have recoil sensitivity. PM me an offer on the 336 if you don't want it anymore.

Yup. I bought two at different times intending to rebarrel to 7-30 Waters but fortunately I cleaned them up and took them shooting first....and they shot so well that I just couldn't bear to change them. So I have six of them now, everything but a bolt-action, and like them all. If I build a 7-30 it would have to be on a rifle with a totally rotten barrel. I bought a 35 Remington for a little more "whack" on the rare occasion I might need it. Will probably source a 340 and a falling block (might make the FB), and maybe build a roller on a Tippman frame before it' all over. You know, "Collect all the action types". It's a sickness.

Difficult to argue with that. I have little need for a .444 Marlin OR a 7-30 Waters....but I wants.

Well, short story/back story; I haven't even got it out of the crate yet. Wife has Parkinson and the disease not only compromises her, it steals most of my time. That said, I hope to get it un-crated and cleaned/setup this week. I have several little projects to attempt. As Paul Harvey always said, "The rest of the story"; stay tuned.

Gary - Parkinson - not fun. Got a friend in Hutch with it, VA got him some meds so he does pretty good. 10 yrs and still slight memory problem and arm that tends to quit on him.

I had JES rebore a 336A with a 24" barrel. He turned into a nice 38-55 for me. Very reasonable and a quick turn around.

The 38-55 is way under rated as a cast bullet shooter. I have a 375 Win and I treat it like it is a 38-55 because it doesn’t beat me so bad.
A really good bullet is the Accurate 200AG. It does wear a check but it shoots very well. I bought it on a recommendation from Tom and I am glad I did.

The 375449 will do well but I prefer to keep them in the 12-1300 FPS so recoil is lighter.
