Me and my big mouth

Tom

prolific purveyor of flapdoodle
I showed a friend my opinel pocket knife (I sharpen it like a kitchen knife, I don't mind resharpening it frequently, the carbon steel doesn't take long.) and he asked me to sharpen some of his knives. Two Gerber's, one sog and a beautiful little 70s era 3" case fixed blade later he asks me to sharpen his kitchen shears. I've never done that before. A little YouTube and I discovered there's no voodoo involved, it looks easier than sharpening a knife.
The shears are a touch loose so I tried to tighten them but the nut backs off a tic when you open and close them. Rather than scratch them, I ordered a spanner type screwdriver to fit it from good old Jeff Bezos mercantile. I'm thinking a drop of loctite is in order. Nice shears by the way, very old wustoffs.
He has a landscaping business and tells me I should start a sharpening business since he spends a lot on sharpening and there's always a waiting list here. He showed me a few of his mower blades and wants them sharpened. Dang, there's nothing quicker than sharpening and balancing those.
Honestly, I don't think I'm that good, but I suppose I'd improve with practice.

Tom,

I make my living by sharpening things. Have been doing so since 2009. If you have questions feel free to ask.

Not sure if posting websites is okay but search “knife sharpening Cleveland Ohio” and you should find me.

Thanks Kevin, I feel a bit intimidated with the idea of charging people to do this. I certainly can't charge by the hour as I'm a bit slow.

The security screw bits I ordered looked like the largest one might work for the shears but the biggest one is way too small. I guess I'll have to use the Dremel to fashion a screwdriver for it.1000000937.jpg

MY wifes wustoff are always dull options on easiest to use sharpener I can buy? The last sharpener was a rolling diamond plated roller that you mount knife on magnet and roll diamond thing against and the 2 slot grinder that has a Corse side and a fine side with slots at a angle none work.
Think a belt sander type? or is wustoff a bad brand?

I don't know if wustoffs are good or bad, the one my friend wants sharpened looks very nice but that's all I have to go by.
I liked this video, even though it's from worksharp, it shows other methods not involving their sharpener.
I bet StrawHat will chime in with better info.

Are these salon shears? If so, stop now. Salon shears are not common scissors and do not get sharpened in that manner.

I still use bench stones for much of my sharpening. The ones I use are DMT diamond plates, the longest I can get. Cheap? No, but worth every penny to me. I also use a slow speed belt sander for sharpening, especially during the busy times, ie November and December. I have yet to test a gadget that gives an edge as proper as either of the two methods I mentioned.

If sharpening vexes you, visit a local farmers’ market. Sharpeners often attend them to get business. Or ask a butcher or fish monger. They might be able to recommend a sharpener to you.

Heck, tell me your location, I might know a sharpener near you.

Oh, man! That's an EASY ONE!

Just use the dremmel to extend the slot from the nut right on through the end of that screw. The a regular screwdriver would fit in there!;)
