Microwaxes Again (Sources)

Okay, blendedwaxes.com is a known quantity as far as others here buying from them and getting some darned good lubes made using them and other stuff.

But I hesitate to put together a group buy for the lousy one pound I'm interested in starting out with. Especially if I use a mix of two...or three...

So I just found these guys and figured out where to find the actual pricing info from another page's link:
http://shop.sculpt.com/wax/microcrystalline-slab-and-bead/

Their brown sculpting wax has the high melt temp I'm after. Anyone use them and how was the product?

Any insights into coloration? Their entire catalog of micro-waxes looks like the colors are on purpose, not an artifact of how aggressively the wax is processed. Looks like.

Haven't looked far enought to see if they rape ya on shipping, but a pound for $8 plus shipping looks like a great way to ease my way into one of the Extreme-ish lubes.

Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I'm inclined to buy a pound here but have the same questions you do.

when I was fooling with lube, I contacted a Frank B. Ross salesman, luckily he was local, I explained what I was trying to do and he sent me samples of what I thought I needed....of course there is some BS in how much you MAY buy if it works

I would remind the group of Starmetal's lube. A high soap lube that shot like a house afire...... Even below zero. It has Beeswax as a component.... Only trouble it wasn't Beeswax. You couldn't make Starmetal's lube with your Beeswax. Ian and others tried desperately to find out just what 'Beeswax' Starmetal had really was!!!
I don't think we know yet!

The moral of this story is there is probably nothing worse than using a component you are not sure of even if it is better than sliced bread! Melt temp isn't the whole picture...You could follow Starmetal footsteps with a formula you can't duplicate!

I thought ol' 'RandyRat' over at Boolit had started selling small amounts of microwax??? Would hurt to PM him and see...

At large, whereabouts unknown.
Could it have been that weird Navy surplus "beeswax" from years past that wasn't beeswax at all?

Yep. Had a fractional analysis done on it via a refinery lab and it had everything under the sun in it, including some extremely heavy, long-chain waxes. When cleaned up it is almost clear.

Pete is right on. Why introduce a variable?
Buying from RandyRat or Blended Waxes means you are getting a known, repeatable product.
You do want to be able to remake the lube later, right?

I was going to get some bees wax from RandyRat, but his web page says he's out for 2017.
People must be buying a lot of it.

he has become a known and repeatable source for his wax.
I got a bunch from DJ when he had cleaned up a wild hive a few years back and it was so good I ended up making chapstick out of part, and black powder lube out of the rest.
when I ordered from Randy I made sure to fill a couple of flat rate boxes so I knew I would be working with the same batch of wax for quite some time.

Well, RandyRat has had his family life blow up and is out of contact for now. No joy trying to get even beeswax from him.

I've posed a group buy inquiry "over there" mainly because I believe it has more traffic than here, but no response yet. Any other suggestions on where to get that magical beeswax?

Sorry to hear about RandyRat...... I think a 'group' buy from 'Blended waxes' for microwax would be best...... Beeswax?? I don't know. I've seen some crummy stuff out there in the guise of the bees' work!

Was just going to PM Randy on some lanolin too! Not casting at the moment but tapered wall drawing some .22 jackets..... Need to make up some swage lube again.

Pete I could probably get you a pound? of Randy's Lanolin if you need it.
I have two baggies left from him. [I think each one is a lb]
I could probably get one in a little flat rate box if you need it.

I got some really nice anydrous lanolin on eBay. Away from home, but their
name is on a sticker on the lid. If anyone cares, I can post it later.

Amazingly tiny traces of anhydrous lanolin makes superb, low force sizing. Until
I tried it, the best was Imperial Wax, but the anhydrous seems a bit better.
A pound, for sizing, will last me this lifetime and a couple more.

I bought 10 lbs of microwax, probably another lifetime supply. Made a batch
of Red Max from Brad's notes, works great for pistols, with moderate testing
so far.

lanolin is really good for lots of things.
I don't know what Eutetic uses for a swage lube but I use the lanolin and castor oil with a little neets foot oil.
I use it for case sizing and for lubing the rams on my presses.
I know others that use lanolin and Vaseline.

after using my mix I forgot where my tin of imperial was, it seems the less I use the better it works.
a very small pea sized drop in a baggie will lube about 75 0-6 size cases with no problem.

Ask you local pharmacy to order some lanolin. That is what I do. My pharmacist is one of the best people I know!
Be sure to specify anhydrous lanolin and expect a pound jar. A pound of lanolin is a heap of lubing waiting to happen.

I seen some bees wax in the S&S section on boolits.
the guy wants 8$ a lb and you'll have to clean it up when you get it.

I've gotten many dumb looks from pharmacists, one of the most notable was when asking for some lanolin many years ago when gathering ingredients for Felix lube. Five places and they all looked at me like I was going to be the next Unibomber. We don't have real pharmacists here except for the little apothecary that just came along in the past few years, which compounds our pet meds and all sorts of weird prescriptions for my wife and I (I recommend the banana-flavored oxytocin, but I digress). Finally, without a pharmacist's help, I discovered Lansinoh, which can always be had in a pinch, such as my wife needed after the first two weeks of nursing....imagine her surprise when she mentioned "nipple ointment" one day and I stepped into the gun room and grabbed a tube for her. "Gun stuff???" she said. Yup, you'd be surprised what all I have in there. Do you like chocolate?
