Model 25 Classic

Looking quite actively at an S&W Model 25 Classic in 45 Colt. This is a new revolver of current manufacture.
Does anyone have an idea on what S&W is cutting for cylinder throats these day?

Local shop has one on hand for a reasonable price. May need to go back with some pin gauges in my pocket.

Regardless the manufacture date, returning with pin gauges is an excellent idea.

Ah, makes sense.
I will just take a few pin gauges. .452, .453, .454 will tell me all I need to know.

Some of us don't have pin gauges.............

When I purchase a new firearm and concerned about cycling, I've been know to take cast bullet dummy rounds to manually cycle through the action. Did that with my 357 Rossi carbine. Had dummies made up in 38 and 357, including 158 SWC's. It's cycled them all.12014.jpg

One is coming home with me today.
Throats all barely pass a .453 minus pin but none accept a .454 minus.

Need to cast up some 250-255 gr. Bummers and find a load I like. I see 6 gr of Red Dot getting a trial early on based on a large supply of it on hand.

Will get photos up when I get home.

Forcing cone is pretty rough but that is a simple fix.
Fired brass from Marlin 1894 CB will not fit! That means it doesn’t have the massive chamber at the rear end, I am pleased by that.

Need to get a bunch of either the 452454 or Lee 255 RNfP cast up and lubed. Some new ammo boxes too so I can segregate ammo for this revolver. Won’t be feeding it the same diet as the Ruger.

That forcing cone looks like a Ruger's. I'd expect it from the Kit Gun manufacturer but not S&W.....although all my Smiffs have cones that look like they were cut with a buggared step drill. How has that EVER been acceptable? The only revolvers I have that have smooth forcing cones are made by Uberti.

You can fix that Marlin's chamber when you change the barrel. ;)
NO! The 45 Colt barrel shoots way too good to ever change. Now the 357 and 44 mag, they are a different story.

I can easily turn a brass lap to smooth the forcing cone. That is pretty simple.
Anyone recall the forcing cone angle on S&W revolvers?

uhh I don't think that's any particular angle... wow.
I do remember hearing a lot of people recut them to 11*s though.

Even if it was supposed to be a certain angle it ain't. 11° is too much to lap from where it is. If it were me I'd use hot glue or wax to cast the cone and guesstimate the included angle with a protractor, then turn and thread a lap to match.

Never considered hot glue or wax for that purpose but it makes sense.
