Mold for Marlin .35 Remington

I'm finalizing a deal on a JM stamped Marlin 336D in .35 Remington.

If you have experience casting for these what molds have worked best for you? How did you go with the Microgroove rifling?

I can and will get an RCBS 35-200-FN but i'd also like to get a plain base mold. I have been looking at the Accurate Molds catalog. There seems to be several copies of the RCBS there with some subtle differences between them.

Lee's 150 grain 1R shoots well for me using Unique for about 1300 fps. My "business" load uses the Lee 200 grain GC mould, powder coated and stoked with a full book max jacketed load of H335.

I know a guy that used one of the 35-200s on a 140# hog . Shot it mid snout , through the sinuses , scrambled the brain pan went down the spinal cord tunnel escaped the spine and stopped in the back straps about 8" behind the shoulder . I have several moulds but a 98' in 358 is a long way from a 35 Rem .

I have both a microgroove & an old ballard rifled 35rem. I've had pretty good luck with the RCBS 35-200 in both with everything from plinking loads up to faster deer rounds. Size it large .359 or 360...

I've also whipped up some fun rounds with 358429, 358432s, 358477.... pretty much any 38spl boolit, appropriately sized & lubed works well. NOE also makes some nice moulds. Enjoy the experiments!! -Andy

Right on about sizing at least .359". My ballard 336 prefers .360" or it gets a little leading in the first inch or two of the barrel.

NOE makes a few Ranch dog copies. These where designed for the Marlin Micro Groove levers.

I have a couple of the originals as well as copies from NOE and others and they are nice bullets. I bought a 230g from NOE thats a RD copy and its a fine bullet with a large meplat that aughts be awesome on big game. 360-232 iirc...

CW, i've read reports on the Marlin forum that NOE 230gn won't chamber in some Marlins.
What year was your's made?
They are a good looking bullet.

NOE has a bad habit of cutting their moulds .002-3" larger in the nose area than the drawing indicates. RD designs were made for the large-throated Marlins (could be any of them in any given year). Combine these factors and variables and it's a crap shoot if it will chamber in your rifle or not.

To load the dice in your favor, make an impact impression of your chamber neck and throat area and take some measurements from it.

I have a few. ;)

Two very early models and and Marauder all chamber it just fine. I have some Loaded for my lil brother but we have t tried them as yet. His is a early 1990’s gun.

I had not herd of any issues.

If ya PM me I can send ya some to try.

Hey CW, are those plain base or gc'd?

Thanks!

I load for three different Marlin's in 35 Rem. My best bullet is the Lee 200 FN copy of the RCBS bullet. I have it in a 6 cav. and size to .359. My alloy is 2% Tin and almost 4% antimony. I'm at work, so I don't have the exact load but I've used 2400, 4759 and 5744 all with about equal results. The biggest thing is two rifles prefer Federal case and one will not shoot with anything but Hornady cases. All three rifles are scoped and will hold one and a quarter inches at 100 yds. for 3 shot groups. That bullet is a deer killing machine in my alloy. I do get some expansion out to about 80 yds. and two holes at 100.
The only plain base I have shot is the Lyman 195 round nose. Unique would keep it under two inches/100 but with a different scope adj. These are our hunting rifles so I haven't played much with plinking loads. But I will say at around 1800 MV with the lee it is very pleasant to shoot and I wouldn't mind an extended shooting session with my hunting loads.

The RXBS 358-200 is a classic copied by many BECAUSE it’s a good one.

I simply prefer a larger meplat for a hunting bullet.

I bought a 1951 336 Marlin from a friend this past June. He had some loaded with the RCBS 250 and some loose. I am shocked at how well they shoot out of this rifle. I have seen no data other than his but it is very accurate with IMR 4895.
