Mount back ordered?

The mount I ordered to put the red dot on my wife’s 686 is on back order. Well that just won’t do.

Went to Cabelas and got A basic Weaver mount, for a 10-22 I think?
Made a simple insert to locate the mount in the groove for the rear sight. Gave it a lip on the rear to butt against the rear of the frame and prevent movement in recoil. Milled a slot in bottom of Weaver base to accept the insert. Will glue the two parts together later.

Looks like it will work fine. Only concern is the fact only 1 screw goes thru both pieces, the second screw hole lined up with the Weaver base screw hole. That hole is now simply The counterbore for the screw head, the rest was machined away making the slot in the bottom.

Ain't it great to be able to fix problems like that at home? Found a bad crown on my MVP today, headed to the shop now to chop off the muzzle, re-crown, and re-thread it. Lathe paid for itself after the first couple of projects and is making me money now.

It has certainly expanded my horizons. Thinking about it over dinner I may just make a new one entirely from scratch. That lets me have a single piece.
I have a 45° cutter for the corner bevels and the dimensions for a Picatinny rail are easy to find online.

Need one made of steel for the srh454. I'm apparently the only one on the planet that broke the weigand mount.
I offered Mr. Weigand to make a steel or ss on his attachment design at my cost. He declined to do a custom unit. After using the weigand on the gp100 & trying the srh model thinking I'd prefer to drill & tap the guns.

When I can, would drill tap & make a little steel rail. So, I like the idea of one piece. You can fall back on the prototype if needed. Best of luck!

The revolver is drilled and tapped for a mount so that helps a ton.

I decided to try making one from scratch out of steel. Not a fast project at all.

I started with a chunk of hex stock I had on hand. A couple hours of milling later I have the rough shape. Until I mill cross groves I won’t know how well the mount fits. Still need to mill the bottom to fit the revolver and drill the holes for the mounting screws.

I figure I have at least 2-3 more hours to go.

Nice work, Brad. I wasn't trying to insinuate yours should be steel but it's guna be real durable. Not about the time when your making something that doesn't exist. Only option would be waiting for alum or paying a pro machinist. I like your way better!

If I can find a a reasonable priced rail with no screw holes and a tall enough base I would use it. Would save me a ton of time.

I used steel because I don’t have a hunk of 7075 thick enough. I have lots of 6061 but 7075 machines cleaner and would make a more durable mount.

You can buy a cutter for making the dual bevels in a single pass but I don’t need a 150 dollar cutter!

150 not bad. I mean it will save your time. Maybe more importantly save you additional setups. I can only imagine that is a big part of the time sappage.

Much of the time was spent trying to figure out how to get close to the specs. The Critical dimensions are datum points which are far more difficult me to locate/hit than a simple dimension across flats.

What would make more sense would be to let someone like Keith buy the cutter and have him make blanks on his CNC machines.

I don’t intend to make enough of these to justify the cutter. I may never make another?

Keith probably has 3 different sizes.

You could cheat & only do 1 or 2 notches about where you want it rather then rail the whole part.

If you did that maybe just add some holes to eliminate weight

I plan to make just a couple notches, I really only need one.

I did find some Al and steel blanks that I could use in the future. Topside is all completely milled, substantial material left on bottom.

Like that there. Don't need whole thing railed. Could lighten through the middle

More like this. No holes, plenty of meat on bottom to fit the revolver in question.

I have a hand full of parkerized steel 1913 rails from various and sundry AR-15 handguards, if I'd known I would have offered some up. Maybe next time.

Need to get it done. Life seems to complicate matters.

Did find a little time today to get some work done. Got the bottom portion That fits the groove in top strap of revolver almost to size.
Did some measuring and calculations and got 3 grooves cut. Mount fits very nicely.
