My XDM 9mm 5.25 Comp-Problem

The first XDM has 26K rounds thru it and the second one 12.5K, very few people will run that much ammo in their lifetime.

I can see that happening.
I have had a lot of guy's show up 'to go shooting' with a 50 round count of pistol or two 20 round count boxes of store-bought rifle ammo and they act like they bought the place out.
i kind of feel bad for them when I see the price tags equal the ammo can I brought.

We are extreme outliers in the world of shooting, as far as quantity is concerned,
and that is very likely why these failures have been seen by Cherokee. He may very well
have fired more rounds through this model pistol than anyone on the planet,
including the factory.

yeah,, I remember well all those 5,000 round torture tests they done in the magazines proving the new pistols would last forever.
I felt bad for the guy standing there schucking rounds into the magazines and then emptying them all day long, especially since he had to shoot for groups every so many rounds to prove how good the gun was.

Wow what a terrible job ......... So what do you do for a living ? I hangout on the range and shoot about 30,000 rounds a week . Got an assistant that loads the 100 round snail drums . ...........

Odds are its actually more like a Ransom rest with a trigger crank and 30s that some poor sod on gravyard spends 6.5 hours a night loading .

Received my repaired XDM 10:45 this morning with a new slide. Good turnaround time, I shipped 6/18 and back today, including transit time.

Ian - I would not bet on it. Thinking about calling an engineer type there and talking to them next week.

I bet they get very few returned for problems so the cost analysis says to not redesign the slide. Why spend more to redesign and retool than you spend on repairs?

Engineers are just accountants who masquerade as scientists.

Not meant to insults those who are engineers here. Those in manufacturing always have an eye on $$$$$. Pretty much why they have the job.

It wouldn't cost much to make a running change to make that bottom cut with a mill
cutter with a 0.020" radius on the tip rather than a sharp corner. Cutters will cost a bit more,
but my bet is they get dozens of slides out of one mill cutter of the type used for final finish.
Probably roughed with one, the a different one for final dimensioning.

As far as engineers as accountants......nope. In my career, we didn't care at all what it cost, just
that it was the very best, most reliable, longest lasting and safest. Costs were high. C'est la vie.

Gun makers are selling consumer products, and if return rate (perhaps ONLY due to low round
count on 99.9% of the guns) is low, may not want to change.....unless cost to change is also
very low. Changing that sharp inside corner to a 0.020 radius should be pretty low, although I will
defer to Keith on that for the definitive answer.

I bet you'd only have to make the cut 1/8" or less to be effective.
it could be programmed into part of the milling/CNC/Polishing process for the bolt and it would only take 30-40 seconds to perform.

End mills with precision sized corner radii are widely available at little more cost than a sharp corner mill. Same with saw type cutters in case that is what they used.

Question for you gentlemen that own one or the other or both. I’m thinking about either a XD or S&W M&P PC in 45 and would like to hear +and - on them. Trigger, sights and how it feels in the hand. I’m mainly looking for a carry piece but it will see plenty of range time so it must be reliable and have a decent trigger.

Thanks.

I also own an XDM 5.25 in 45 ACP. Stock trigger is good, but I put a Powder River kit in mine for a lighter trigger. Accuracy is better than I can shoot and it has been 100% reliable for ~12K rounds. No slide problem like I had on the 9mm version.

BTW - shot the newly returned 9mm version with the replacement slide today, 100% function and accuracy is there. GTG for awhile.

The only XD I own is the Model 2 Sub-Compact (3" bbl) in 9 mm...........I don't consider it a CC piece. It weighs in at 26 oz, unloaded. Quite a bit more when you top the magazine off with 13 rounds of ammo. More of a range toy/ house gun. They make a slimmer version (XD-S) but it is still too large for daily carry, IMO. The slim version sheds only 3 ounces, has a slightly longer barrel (3.3") and being a single stack, the grip isn't as comfortable as the "Grip Zone" double stack. I like the sights, particularly, the fiber optic front. Shows up well in good light..............don't know how well it does in low light. No matter, cause I mounted a CT Railmaster green laser on it's front rail. Stock DAO trigger works for me, I prefer DA, even in revolvers. I have @ 2K rounds through it, mostly cast, without a single hiccup. More importantly...........my better half likes it too.

Winelover - See how personal it can be choosing a gun for CC use. My ECD is an XD 9 sub-compact, like yours, with an extra mag on the left side. Carries well in OWB holster and I dress accordingly. Great piece, shoots well, I did put a PRP trigger it in for a lighter shorter pull. Works well out to 50 ft in combat drills with movement. No problems in ~4K rounds of mostly jacketed ammo. I tried an XDS and the trigger was just not right for me and I could not shoot it well enough for anything much beyond arms length.

My primary 9mm CC piece is a Kahr CM-9. It weighs in at 20.5 ounces, loaded with seven rounds of factory defensive ammo and equipped with a CT Laserguard. Huge difference in size and weight when you tote it around all day long.

Here's a photo of the Kahr, superimposed over the XD Sub-Compact.

I don't really notice the weight of the XD and do like having 13 rounds available. I have even carried my 5.25 9mm for CC with a suite, no problem. Picking a CC is such a personal thing for many reasons. The main thing to me is if you can effectively use it.

Well after looking at both the S&W and the XD-S I have a XD-S mod 2 3.3 in 45 coming. Springfield is now giving a pretty good discount to NRA instructors which didn’t hurt the deal either. The XD-S shot good and felt ( to me) better than the Smith. I found the Smith grip to be too small and it felt lost in my hand.
So if all goes well it should be here next week and then off to the range.
