Need a new (to me) 22 rifle

Circlin' back around. . . . . I fear I'm doomed. I got it narrowed down to 2 likely candidates: Winchester 52 or a Springfield 1922.

The Winchester and Springfield samples I shot had matching iron sights: Lyman 48 rear with a globe up front. I think I'd want to change the front sight for field use. I shot an informal silhouette match with each and it was a bit of a headache but I didn't swap out inserts, so who knows. The sights were OK for the 200 yard plinking.

In both "tests" I shot the Winchester a few percentage points better.

Argh. I've got a set here. Can't seem to remember to pick up my chronograph, but I have the sight inserts for a rifle I sold a few years ago....

The miitary surplus (CMP) Harrington and Richardson M12 is another viable option. This is a military copy of the Harrington and Richards 5200, set up for marksmanship training. We shot them prone on a 200 yard range with the Redfield Palma Sights and were suprised at the accuracy with match .22 LR ammunition.

They are floating round at guns shows and private sale. They are drilled and tapped for external scope mounts, at least the ones I've seen.

Springfield Model 1922's will shoot with anything, EXCEPT, it has a standard NM '03 trigger. If you want a light trigger rifle, that is not you choice unless willing to invest another $100 plus in a Huber Trigger.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Consider getting Shaver inserts for the Lyman or Redfield globe fronts. They have crosshairs, apertures and many other much better field designs than the factory inserts that are designed for 50 foot and 100 yard black bullseye targets.
Good idea. Just make sure you store the little box of inserts some place you won't loose it. It's smaller than a ring box by a lot. Haven't seen mine in close to 20 years!

Mine are in a tin Altoids box, stuck to a magnetic business card to corral them, in my range bag. Bigger can is harder to lose--this is not the first set I bought, just the first set that I didn't lose before I got home!

Bret, I just want one really good 22 that makes me happy to shoot. Averaged out over the 20 or so years I probably have left, the cost is less than a 10/22 (or a couple thousand rounds of 22s!) each year.

I getcha. I fell into my 52 entirely through pure dumb luck. It's a great rifle. I have many, many times what I paid for it tied up in the Lyman Jr Targetspot I put on it. Get what you want and be happy!!!

I have a Springfield Model 1922 and a Model 1922M1 and they would be the last 22's I would sell. Both were arsenal rebuilt in the 1930's and do anything I want done with a 22.

I have a mossberg m44us from cmp... the trigger is phenomenal... have used it to train many many kids and adults in starting out in marksmanship... best $75 I have ever spent... would go to my grave... or to family when I kick the bucket...
