Need help on a chuck

I need help in deciding what Collet Chuck to buy. Not opposed to a China made product, just need to know if a 5c would be what I'm going for since I have a PM 1022 as a Lathe. Probably only going to spin small stock, 1" and smaller.

Biggest issue will be finding a back plate that works with your spindle.
I would email Matt and see if he has suggestions.

Shars has some decent 5C collet chucks but I don’t know about mounting. Looks like the 1022 uses a pretty unique mounting system.

I bought a 5C plain back chuck to mount on a rotary table. It was about 5" outside diameter, had a counterbore on the back, and three screws that go in the front. I think it would easily fit on a 5" adapter plate, could machine it to fit the counterbore on the chuck. A set of transfer punches to mark the holes, mine came with 10mm screws, I D & Ted the adapter plate for 3/8-16 socket head cap screws.

Now, as to the Chuck itself. I'm thinking a Chinese made chuck with a backplate included.

If the backplate can be (or is) made to fit your spindle nose then that might be the best way to go. I usually make my own from scratch but then I have lots of access to material and other machines to use. One of my collet chucks has a D1-6 integral mounting, cheaper and quicker to get it that way rather than make a separate backplate.

By the way, if it were "my" money, I would only buy Bison Set-tru chucks, like this one. I learned from my machining mentor - cry once, and never regret it:

I have this 6", 6-jaw Bison set-tru on my PM12x36, which I bought a long ago, like around 2006 or so, and then it went up in price, and it has more than payed for itself on the projects I have done for me and for others ($). Once "set", it is amazing how close to perfect you can remove a piece and put it back and still remain centered (good enough for anything I have done so far).
