New birthday handgun.

So the wife said I could get a new handgun for my birthday which is on the 25th of this month. I have always wanted a double action 22 Long rifle revolver. I’m just not sure which way to go. Money is not really an object but I want it to be a 4 inch barrel or less some thing that could packed nicely but still have enough sight radius to shoot accurately. I was really looking at the Ruger LCR series. Possibly an SP01. The GP 100 is cool but that’s a lot of gun for a 22 Long rifle. Or maybe just an old classic S&W.

Close to your price range.
I have not regretted buying my Smith 317, .22 LR

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I know of a Colt OP .22 Target revolver with Kings Conversion, but it's kind of pricey. Your brother would never be able to top you on that! :)

Look for a good used M18 Smith & Wesson (it’s a 4” K22) They seem to be cheaper than 6” K22s for some reason. Nothing nicer than a pre-lock Smith &Wesson. I’ve had several S&W Kit Guns (J frame) both 2” and 4” and have never shot them well for some reason.

K-22.
or a Dan Wesson.
or as a first resort a Ruger Mk-2-3-4 target model... [semi-auto though]

S&W model 63, great gun, love it, permanent place in my back pocket. SP 101 would be a good choice and easier to find.

Not that I get a vote, but I should! Get a K Frame Smith. Maybe it won't make your imposed limit, but look hard and smile long!

I'll mail in my ballot as soon as I can get the lid off....

Sounds like the LCRx is right in your price range, Lightweight, three inch barrel, adjustable sights, exposed hammer (if your into SA), better OTB trigger than most handguns, these days.

It's the one I've been tossing around. Just can't make myself pull the trigger on a 22 LR revolver that cost as much as a 38 caliber version of the same pistol. So I went with the LCP II and saved @ $200.

I have the LCRx3 in 38 and like it a lot. You could do worse than one of these ugly little ducklings. They carry and shoot well.

Other than the difficulty of finding one a Ruger SSM in 32 H&R would be good. Accurate, cheap to shoot, and capable of hitting harder than a 22 LR.

I would look for a K-frame S&W in .22 LR. I would also lean towards finding an old revolver rather than seeking out a new gun.
If it needs to be a new gun, then I would consider the Ruger SP101 chambered .22
In any event, this is a bad time to buy ANY gun as the market is crazy right now. All guns are currently overpriced.
If you want to gamble a little, set the money aside and wait for the presidential election to be over.

FA you could get your choice of BFR long and probably a cylinder with rifled throats cambered for 22 LR and another for 22 mag . Imagine the fun at the range when you step to the line with that cannon and it just goes pop . :)

I bought a 4", S&W 63 for my daughter, in the late 80s.
She still has it. She could keep spinner targets going all day at 25 yards with it!

I haven't bought a gun in a long time.
What is the price range of the S&W model 63 these days?

My suggestion is a Freedom Arms in the caliber and barrel length of your choice. :)
Well my vote was for a S&W K Frame 22lr, but since you opened the Freedom Arms door Sir, you have changed my vote. Since the Postal Undertakers haven't picked up my ballot, I'll change the S&W box to the FA box on the ballot.

Waco should really listen to us. A little Ruger DA revolver really is an impulse buy where the S&W and especially the FA are journey's.

Waco, I'm having fun with this, but a birthday gun is special and even more so as your bride suggested it. Heck, when my bride mentions that I haven't bought a gun in a while and wonders if there's something I want, I have to try to not spit out my coffee and explain that I'll look for something and keep a straight face. The straight face is hard to keep but I'm well practiced! The rambling point is explain you need to research the issue as this is a "Special" gun and don't want to mess it up (keeping the straight face here is vital) and see if a "whatever" caliber is available in a FA97.

You are welcome!
