Hello, I've been lurking for a few weeks and liked what I saw so I figured I would join.

I used to just cast for my .58 musket and 1884 springfield, pan lubing and sizing the few bullets I needed with a lee sizer. Recently I bought a single action .45 and decided I wanted to try some authentic ammo, so I managed to find a 4 cavity ideal marked 454190 and got myself a saeco sizer for it. Since I had the sizer I figured I would branch out into smokeless loads for the 45 and my 44 and 357, and maybe my .30-30 eventually. So now I'm looking at what lube to use, or what formula to mix my own, and I'm shopping for molds.

Welcome, Jordan. You're about to fall down a rabbit hole, so you are warned!

You will get as many recommendations for lube as you get responses. If you wish to make your own, you climate will support one if the most simple, effective, non-toxic, and pleasant mixtures invented: Beeswax and Vaseline. For revolvers and most rifle loads up to 1800-2000 fps you don't need anything else.

Our site owner is currently in the process of liquidating his father-in-law's extensive mould, die, and equipment collection, so look in the swap/sell section for posts from Brad or other members, some are already there for moulds.

I'll have to give that a try, seems simple enough. I have lots of beeswax on hand for black powder lube. I'm hoping I can get one formula for all the weather here, that I can run through my lube sizer without heat, since I read that the saecos don't like heat so much. I also just size in my house so it's always a nice temperature.

I was thinking of ordering their 2500 and BAC to try, if for nothing else than inspiration for my own mixture.

I have thought about it and I might give it a go, but I couldn't do that for my blackpowder loads. So I would have to keep the old fashioned stuff on hand for that at least.

Powder coating bullets for smokeless loads is a great solution to all bullet lubrication challenges, I highly recommend it.

I searched and found a lot of references to Ben's red, but is there a thread with a list of recipes for the different versions?

50% beeswax
30% Red, Tacky Lucas High Temp Grease
10% Johnson's Paste Wax
5% Dexron II or Dexron III Trans. Fluid
5% STP Oil Treatment

I have made it and it works well. Go slow with the heat, need to get the grease pretty well melted. I wouldn’t add the beeswax until all other ingredients are well mixed and beginning to cool.

An a hello from Minnesota.
If you make Ben's Red. Remember to continually stir.
Remember No question is too unimportant to ask if it is giving you problems!

Lol, I went down it once before I settled on a variation on emmerts for black powder.

haha. hahahaha. You have NO idea.

Ben's Red is a really good lube but is way more complex than you will ever need for revolver loads. The grease makes more smoke than necessary and I find it greases the heck out of everything. Before spending a significant portion of my life and life's savings on the smokeless powder lube warpath, my lube of choice was Felix World Famous Lube, and still is for anything that won't be stored in the hot vehicle or shot in freezing temperatures. It will grease-up a revolver pretty well, too, but accuracy-wise is second to none in my guns. The Beeswax/Vaseline mix is simple and will do 90% of anything that needs doing with a cast bullet. I like it a little goopy at 50/50, some like it more firm at 60% beeswax. You can add stuff to it but none of it is really necessary unless you're using gas checks and pushing 40K PSI.
